?Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield, the most celebrated leaders of the Great Awakening of the 1740s, had colleagues who also merit attention. That is the major thesis of this excellent biography of one of those colleagues, Gilbert Tennent, whose New Light' ministry in the middle colonies has frequently been slighted. Working without the benefit of a large collection of Tennent papers, Coalter has nonetheless fashioned a coherent biographical account of one important pastor's career at a critical moment in American religious history. Particularly impressive is Coalter's delineation of the stages of Tennent's ministry ... Tennent's own moderate disposition led him ultimately toward a mediating role among Presbyterian factions. These themes are intelligently discussed, as are Tennent's complicated relations with Whitefield and his role in founding the College of New Jersey at Princeton. Coalter's book is not light reading, but for serious students of American religious history it fills a significant gap. Endnotes; valuable bibliography.
