Patty Duke Book A Winner

This is an interesting book to read especially if you are a fan of actress Patty Duke. It does cover most of her extensive work in films, television and on stage. And, an impressive career it is indeed. It even covers Patty's years as a recording artist for United Artists Records. However, there is no photo copy of her popular album, SONGS FROM VALLEY OF THE DOLLS and this seems like a strange ommision. Other than that it is a book worth having in your own private library.

Stephen Eberly has not only mastered the art of Patty Duke, but is also modest in leaving out that he is a wonderful french teacher at a high school! BRAVO STEPHEN!!! we're waiting for the next one!

Linda K. Fuller, PhD, is professor of communications at Worcester State College. She is the author/(co-)editor of more than 20 books, including The Cosby Show (1992), Community TV in the U.S. (1994), and Dictionary of Quotations in Communications (1997). Awarded Fulbright scholarships to teach in Singapore in 1996 and do AIDS research Senegal in 2002, she has also been a Visiting Scholar at Northeastern University.

About the Author

RICHARD A. GABRIEL is a military historian, adjunct professor of Ethics and Humanities at Daniel Webster College, and a former Army intelligence officer. He is the author of 24 books, including the Greenwood Press publications The Culture of War: Invention and Early Development (1990), The Painful Field: The Psychiatric Dimension of Modern War (1988), and To Serve With Honor: A Treatise on Military Ethics and the Way of the Soldier (1982).

KAREN S. METZ is an academic librarian and a former medical librarian. She is the author of Information Sources in Power Engineering: A Guide to Energy Resources and Technology (Greenwood Press, 1975).

An excellent study

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in ancient armies. Many such books simply present the weapons and armor, some about army organization, and an overview of tactics; Gabriel and Metz have gone far beyond that.
Weapons and armor are covered in detail, with information from experiments the authors performed with replicas of the weapons in question. Organization and tactics are also covered, with special attention to the tactics employed with each weapon.
However, the authors also present information and speculation on casualty rates, types of wounds suffered in combat, mortality, disease control, and military medicine, greatly enhancing the value of the book for those who want to understand ancient armies and combat.

Vigorously asserts the old commonplace that chariots were used as shock forces, much like 20th century tanks. However, experts in the field conclude that their main role was as fast vehicles for the delivery of arrows and secondarily as pursuers of fleeing infantry. Neither use is an example of shock. This apparent uncritical reading of the sources perhaps reflects the danger inherent in neither author being a professional historian of the period.

A fascinating look at ancient warfare

This short work (some 150 pages) contains more information on ancient armies than the next six combined! The first chapter discusses the evolution of armies during the Bronze Age of Sumer and Egypt. The second chapter in entitled, The Military Revolution, and follows the advent of iron and its effect on warfare. Chapter three examines the weapons of the ancient world, and examines their lethality, particularly with respect to the evolution of armor. (This is the real gem of this book!) The fourth chapter examines injuries and death on the ancient battlefield, and chapter five examines the medical knowledge of military doctors throughout the ancient world.

This book is quite amazing! In such a short space, it contains a wealth of information, bringing a thorough understanding of ancient warfare. The sections on medical aspect of ancient warfare contained information I have never seen before, and the sections on weapons are quite informative as well.

My one complaint against this book is that it is not laid out in a chronological order. That is to say, if you are interested in (for example) the Assyrian army, you will not find many particulars about it. However, I will admit that such was not the scope of this book. What this book aims to be, it achieves brilliantly. I recommend this book to everyone interested in ancient warfare.

Some releases required commentaries several pages long because of the number of mistakes that needed to be addressed. WILLIAM SHAMAN is on the library faculty of Bemidji State University, Minnesota. He is the author of several journal and encyclopedia articles, numerous short articles and reviews, and co-author, with Susan Nelson, of a forthcoming discography of Marcel Moyse. His first book, Giuseppe De Luca: A Discography

WILLIAM J. COLLINS, an Assistant Professor of English at Kutztown University, teaches American Literature and Science Fiction courses. He has been an opera critic for Pacifica Radio and music critic for the Davis Enterprise in Northern California. He has published several discographies of opera singers, critical essays on many aspects of the opera, as well as on Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and Phillip K. Dick. He is the co-author, with Bruce Levene, of the first biography of the nineteenth-century outlaw, Black Bart, entitled Black Bart: The True Story of the West's Most Famous Stagecoach Robber

CALVIN M. GOODWIN, a priest of the Society of Jesus, teaches classics in a Jesuit secondary school in Portland, Maine. He writes the annotations for the International Record Collectors' Club reissues of historical vocal recordings.

A noble pirate of the high C's

Eddie Smith was personally known to many friends and acquaintances of mine, and I at least knew his work, which the moguls of the world's biggest record companies called piracy. Eddie produced about a thousand pirate records, almost all of them of operatic performances originating from the Metropolitan Opera, in New York City, the remainder coming from virtually every other opera house in the Western world.

Americans seldom question conventional wisdom, especially when it comes with a seal of approval from the government or a television talking head, and one of the things they have been told for decades is that making and distributing pirate recordings is a Bad Thing, in part because they left "struggling artists" (Callas, Pavarotti, Norman, Gheorghiu, and the like) to suffer the loss of royalty revenues. Rubbish! Everyone who has ever met an actual living, breathing opera buff knows that the acquisition of a pirate recording never once deterred him from buying a commercial recording. Eddie's clients were operatic omnivores: they wanted EVERY performance they could lay their hands on by the singers they treasured and pursued from role to role, theater to theater, and city to city.

Gratitude is due the publisher (Greenwood Press, a household name in reference publishing) and the editors (Messrs. Shaman, Collins, and Goodwin) of this volume and its sequel, "More EJS" (what else would it be called?), for producing a truly outstanding work of reference. The editors leave no stone unturned in their quest for full and accurate documentation of Smith's releases, which were noted for two things above all: the miserable quality of their production and the near-complete absence of documentation of any sort. Smith's failings in these areas may well have been deliberate. Certain institutions and singers--the Met and Jessye Norman are examples in each category that come to mind--used their influence to bring the heavy hand of state power down upon record pirates. The better a pirate's productions, the hotter the pursuit by the Mets and Jessyes of this world. Smith got hammered more than once, of course, but the pirates who produced better-sounding, better-looking stuff got hammered much harder and much more often.

Forty and more years ago, most of the collectors and fans of my acquaintance knew, as did I, that Eddie Smith, the documenter of live operatic performances, was a priceless historical and cultural resource. This thoroughly researched, scholarly book and its sequel are the tribute that Eddie has long merited.

The year 1988 was notable for being the centennial of playwright Eugene O'Neill's birth and a time of unprecedented democratization in the People's Republic of China and rapprochement with the West. In this optimal climate, a remarkable festival and conference devoted to O'Neill was held in Nanjing, China, orchestrated mainly by Haiping Liu, who secured the funds and cooperation necessary to lure noted O'Neill scholars and theatre artists from around the world. Liu selected and edited papers for publication after the conference, but he realized that this would be a difficult task conducted from China. At his invitation Lowell Swortzell, a conference participant, became co-editor, and in the dark days following the political upheaval in China in 1989, Swortzell assumed much of the burden of editing, organizing, clearing rights, and generally readying the final volume.

The essays included capture the intellectual and artistic stimulation of the conference. Organized in divisions similar to the order in which the papers were delivered, they explore the major areas of O'Neill scholarship by some of the most renowned scholars from the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, Japan, and China. They emphasize O'Neill's international reputation and productions, particularly in Asia. Included is an open forum discussion of the festival productions, as well as photographs. The circumstances of the festival and conference are a story unto themselves, and in their individual introductions, the co-editors relate some of the background and convey some of the flavor of the events--providing insights into the continued appeal of O'Neill in China and the world.

It is a series of essays that were presented as papers at a conference in Nanjing, China, by outstanding O'Neill scholars from throughout the world. Their papers represent the latest scholarship on O'Neill from a wide range of viewpoints. Part 1 reveals the extent to which O'Neill was influenced by Taoism in his writing (his home in California is called Tao House). Part 2 of the book is "O'Neill in Comparison," and there are fine papers relating O'Neill's art to that of other playwrights. Essays in Part 3 provide information on O'Neill's characterization of women, the blacks in his plays, and elements of his playwriting technique. Part 4 considers various aspects of O'Neill's plays in production, and Part 5 looks at productions of his plays in Sweden, China, and Japan. This is a rich collection of 30 essays by writers who understand O'Neill and theatrical production. The thorough index indicates the range of subjects in the book, including Absurd drama, Brecht, Kierkegaard, O'Casey, Robards, and Tao Wang (Beyond the Horizon). About the Author

HAIPING LIU is Professor and Chair of English at Nanjing University, China. The organizer of the festival and conference Eugene O'Neill--World Playwright held in China in June 1988, he has published books and articles on O'Neill in both English and Chinese, including Eugene O'Neill on Drama (1988).

LOWELL SWORTZELL is Professor of Educational Theatre at New York University. His publications on O'Neill and other subjects in drama have appeared in professional journals and collections. A specialist in children's theatre, he is editor of several collections of plays and author of books in that field, including the International Guide to Children's Theatre and Educational Theatre (Greenwood Press, 1989), winner of the Distinguished Book Award of the American Alliance for Theatre in Education and named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book.
