Long overshadowed by many of the giants of Spanish American literature, he is finally taking his place as one of this century's most original and innovative writers of short fiction. Rose's book is a detailed analysis of the writer's principal stories with particular emphasis upon his unique use of narrative mode and dialogue in portraying characters and events that are typically Cuban yet at the same time undeniably universal. It is through her study of point of view and colloquial language that Roses demonstrates how Novas Calvo, through a curious blending of Havana history and his own personal life, communicates to his reader a very authentic vision of the contemporary outsider. A useful selected bibliography of primary and secondary sources is included. An appropriate acquistion for undergraduate, graduate, and public libraries."-Choice

African Americans of the South have long had a rich tradition of folklore and customs, many of which predate the Civil War. Some of these beliefs originated in the South, while others have their roots in voodoo and African religions. But with the end of the Civil War and the decline of segregation, the folklife of Southern African Americans has been disappearing. Many African American children were taught to forget all reminders of the long hard years of slavery, and many African Americans continue to be unaware of their people's cultural contributions in song, dance, art, and literature. While folklore has always been an intrinsic part of African American society, it was not until the early 1940s that African American folklore was a subject of research.

As a reference work, this volume preserves the folklife of Southern African Americans and refers readers to additional sources of information. The first part includes alphabetically arranged entries for a wide range of topics from Southern African American folklife, such as critter stew, death customs, evil spirits, High John the Conqueror, peach tree leaves, persimmon beer, quilts, ragtime, and snakes. Information for these entries was drawn from interviews and from scholarly works. The entries include cross-references to entries in the second part of the volume, which is an extensive catalog of books, articles, and other sources of information. These works are arranged in topical chapters to facilitate research.

African American folklore is a vibrant, living cultural force brought into being by a people removed from their culture and placed into a new and strange environment. The African American folklife of the South, rich in spirit and tradition, is explored in this encyclopedia.

The first part is a highly selective dictionary that defines topics gathered from secondary sources and from 27 interviewees chosen for their knowledge of African American folkways. Very brief entries are arranged alphabetically, from A long road has no end (an aphorism meaning "Don't take the easy way out") to Zydeco. Examples of other entries include Anansi stories; Egg in the hand ("Hoodoo method of finding a murderer"); Joplin, Scott; Storyville; and Vinegar pie. Topics taken from secondary sources are followed by a number or numbers that refer to citations in the bibliography section of the work. The bibliography is a catalog of more than 1,900 sources divided into seven chapters, including "General Works," "Folk Music," and "Myths, Tales and Customs." A section of black-and-white photos showing various aspects of southern black culture, as well as some of the interviewees, is included in the volume, as are appendixes listing major African American cultural festivals, libraries and archives, state cultural programs, and the interviewees.

Although there is some interesting information to be gleaned from the dictionary section, the most valuable part of the book is the extensive bibliography. Overall, this useful and clearly laid out reference source, more specific and narrower in focus than Folklore: An Encyclopedia of Beliefs, Customs, Tales, Music, and Art [RBB Ap 1 98], is a solid enhancement for black history or American folklife sections in academic and large public libraries.

Such a complex environment, Schoonmaker argues, necessitated tight civilian control of the engaged armed forces and required restraint in carrying out their combat duties.

In addition to the political-military factors, Schoonmaker also focuses on the joint army-navy-air aspects of the operation. He concentrates on the uniqueness of the intervention which makes the lessons learned from it applicable in some circumstances, but not in others. A study of the Dominican intervention is important because of its implications for defense needs and structure in a time of tight military budgets. The author also outlines the problems associated with quick-reacting forces and indicates the necessity for efficient intelligence, communications, logistics, and command and control. The book has two main sections. The first part shows how Hamilton and Washington understood the moral ends of the American political community and the constitutional means of presidential power. The second part studies the discarding of Hamilton's teachings by four statesmen who helped shape the modern theory of presidential power: Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and by scholars who molded public expectations of the presidency. An epilogue discusses the possible direction of the presidency by examining Ronald Reagan's understanding of the office. Loss concludes that Corwin's Hamilton thesis is more persuasive as an admonition to revive sound constitutional theory than as an historical account of the relation between Hamilton's teachings and modernity. Corwin's mature reflections imply that a return to moderation in stating what the Constitution permits in presidential power and discretion is an important task for constitutional scholarship today. About the Author

ROBERT F. UTTER served on the Washington State Supreme Court from 1971 to 1995, serving as Chief Justice between 1979 and 1981. Justice Utter served as a deputy prosecuting attorney, court commissioner, and on both the King County Superior Court and the Washington State Court of Appeals prior to joining the State Supreme Court. He also taught state constitutional law at the University of Puget Sound School of Law (now Seattle University School of Law).

HUGH D. SPITZER is an Affiliate Professor of Law at the University of Washington School of Law, where he teaches state constitutional law and other courses. He also practices public finance and state and local government law in Seattle with Foster Pepper & Shefelman PLLC.

About the Author

AGNES N. O'CONNELL is Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Community Psychology Programs at Montclair State College. Head of the American Psychological Association (APA)--Division of the Psychology of Women Task Force on History, Dr. O'Connell has also served as guest editor of the Psychology of Women Quarterly, is a fellow of APA's Division of the Psychology of Women, and is the recipient of numerous certificates of recognition.

NANCY FELIPE RUSSO is Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies and Director of Women's Studies at Arizona State University. A former president of APA's Division of the Psychology of Women, she has also served as associate editor for the Psychology of Women Quarterly. She is a fellow of five APA divisions, was the recipient of the 1985 Distinguished Leadership Award, and is the coauthor, with Agnes O'Connell, of many books and articles on the psychology of women. Their work in the history of women in psychology was recognized by a 1981 Distinguished Publication Award of the Association for Women in Psychology.

It covers the U.S. failure to realize that most Chinese people supported the Communist revolution and the U.S. attempt to keep the reactionary Nationalists in power after they lost the Civil War. Next, the work considers the misconception that Red China was an instigator of the Korean War, the U.S. attempt to destroy the North Korean state, and China's decision to intervene to prevent American forces from proceeding to its frontier. The text also traces the adoption of Taiwan as an American protectorate, the flirtation with atomic war to protect the Nationalist-held islands of Quemoy and Matsu, and the decades-long U.S. policy of denying Communist China a seat at the UN. The work concludes with Nixon's decision to recognize China because U.S. policy was threatening world peace and order.

Jazz first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in the 1926 production of Skyscrapers, Carpenter's ballet of work and play. Carpenter was born in Park Ridge, Illinois, 28 February 1876 and died 26 April 1951 in Chicago. New recordings of his music have recently been issued in LP and CD formats.
