In this interesting intellectual exercise, the authors present a "conceptual piece" that mostly is a summary of the history of higher education in the United States, with a particular focus on library schools. This overview sets the scene for today's library school dilemmas and the authors' proposal for three-tiered library education?bachelor-, master-, and doctorate-level programs. Their concept of what MLS programs ought to become is one-sided, focusing on information and technology needs to the point of removing the traditional concept of libraries. Their contention is that the term "information studies" removes the narrow focus on libraries as institutions. Their proposed solution is to ally the graduate study of librarianship with fields more focused on technological advances rather than any concept of service. Melvil Dewey's tradition of pragmatic education is bemoaned in search of a central theory that librarianship could adhere to, embrace, and promote to those who hold the university purse strings. Several appendixes comprise more than half the book. A compilation that presented a balanced variety of viable options for the future training of librarians in addition to the authors' own suggestions would have been of more value in the ongoing debate about the future of librarianship.
