This study examines the leading 19th century Russian revolutionary organization, Land and Freedom, during its three brief years of existence and its significance for later Russian history. The book traces the two groups which emerged within Land and Freedom: the populist faction known as the narodniki, dedicated to propagandizing among the peasantry of the villages, and the violent sub-group sometimes called the politiki for whom assassination of government officials and eventually of the tsar himself appeared the sole route to change.

About the Author

BEVERLEY BARE BUEHRER is a freelance writer and an Instructor at Kishwaukee College. Her previous books include Cary Grant: A Bio-Bibliography (Greenwood, 1990) and Japanese Films (1990). She has written on a wide range of topics, and her work has appeared in magazines such as Film Quarterly, Early American Life, and IVideo. She is a contributing writer to the Magill Cinema Annual.

A Fitting Academic Study

Beverly Buehrer's book is a well written academic text on the subject. Similar to others in this series of biographies, published by Greenwood Press, the first part is devoted to a snapsnot account of the actor's life and works.
Beverly is generous in allowing the reader to draw his own conclusions on certain aspects of Boris's life, such as his birth origin or the confusion in names of the various stock companies where he is said to have performed. Often she is able to make a willing argument as to why "facts" have been jumbled and muddled along the years.
His films, stage, radio, television, and recordings are all listed in an exhaustive (for 1993 ! other accomplishments have surfaced since this book was written) index with items cross referenced.
I am a collector of Karloff, and appreciate the number of entertainment reviews she includes with each film-highlighting in particular those where Boris's name is mentioned.
Extra text and information is devoted to his major films such as the FRANKENSTEIN trilogy and the MUMMY.
There are a few editing errors scattered throughout (such as listing MAD GENIUS as Boris's final film for Warner Brothers--five more were to follow over the years) but for the average reader they are nothing of consequence. Biographers of Boris since Beverly's book, and those to come will check and cross-check their references so her mistakes will be rectified.
Although, since Scott Nollen's excellent books BORIS KARLOFF, A CRITICAL ACCOUNT... and BORIS KARLOFF, A GENTLEMAN'S LIFE, have been written, I doubt there is much more to say about the man !
I highly recommend this book for the academic minded person researching Boris Karloff. Performing Arts schools are encouraged to include this in book in their library. A fitting tribute to a very distinguished actor.
Those readers looking for a more biography-type book, may want to consult Scott Nollen's books.

Among the works analyzed are Waiting for Lefty, Watch on the Rhine, The Crucible, The Trial of the Catonsville Nine, In White America, Black Elk Speaks, and As Is. This work will be a valuable reference source for courses in American theatre history, popular culture, and women's and ethnic studies, and a welcome addition to college, university, and public libraries.

Thus at one end of its time spectrum, the study makes the initially surprising omission of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men presumably because that only ostensibly deterministic play is not politically tendentious. At the other end, David Mamet--in spite of his having written searing indictments of American corruption--gets only a single mention as an individualistic male playwright. But if this volume is an example of "politically correct" academic thinking, its usefulness is hardly limited thereby. The author is impressively informed about theater dealing with Native American, African American, and Vietnam War affairs, and the coverage of the McCarthy era is excellent (though there are minor lapses in the highly selective index, and such a name as Aaron Copland's is consistently misspelled). Touchy matters such as feminist concepts of dramatic structure are dealt with deftly, as are the recent developments in the world of homosexual theater. RENA SANDERSON is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Boise State University. She teaches courses on American literature and women writers. Her current research interests include Hemingway, immigrant and expatriate writings, and autobiographies by women of the Lost Generation. Professor Sanderson organized and directed the Hemingway in Idaho conference in June 1989.

Don't touch that dial - don't miss this book

Commercial radio was more than entertainment for kids growing up in the '50s, '60s & '70s. It was a lifeline to everything cool - a chance for kids living "in the sticks" to keep up to date on what was hot and what was not. Before Cousin Brucie, Wolfman Jack & John "Records" Landecker, there was Gordon McLendon. His claim to fame was re-creating sporting events, in many cases, making games more exciting than the real thing. McLendon was lucky and good. His was a simple formula long before broadcasters thought in such terms. He believed in the total package of music, personality and promotion (not necessarily in that order). Mr. Garay does an amazing job of retracing "The Old Scotsman's" impact on the industry good and bad (like the All Want-Ad format). McLendon was one of the most influential people in radio at a time when it was making the transition from true "broad"casting in to the early stages of what's known as "narrow"casting. Sadly, there are few books devoted to radio's pioneers. Garay's work, which comes across as a labor of love, is the standard for which all other broadcast history books should strive to attain.

Poet, Dramatist, and innovator of AM radio!

This is the definitive work on McLendon's life and innovations in radio. Having listened to his live broadcast of the 3rd game of the 1951 playoff between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, won on Bobby Thomson's dramatic 9th inning home run, introduced me to McLendon and to this day, is the most dramatic baseball radio broadcast I have heard. This particular game was not one of his re-creations (I have also heard one of his re-creations, an 1886 baseball game!) but live from the long gone home of the Giants, the Polo Grounds. McLendon had a poetic, dramatic and literate interpretation as the Thomson game unfolded. I had to know more about McLendon and this book is a home run!

I wish that this book told us more, but as an academic work it is better than some of the commercial mush about GML that is in circulation. Good as a reference work for writers.

"This well-edited and well-written biographical dictionary provides excellent introductory information on the 52 French women writers selected for inclusion--some well-known, some, as the editors admit, 'unknown even to the specialist.' The major criterion for inclusion was a substantial body of published work. Readers may question whether this was consistently applied (Elsa Triolet, for example, was not included), but most names one would expect to find are there. Editorial principles are clearly stated in a brief preface, and an introduction surveys the position of women in French literary life from the 12th century to the current period. The signed articles that follow are each approximately ten pages long, and all follow the same format: a biography, a discussion of major themes, a survey of criticism, and a bibliography of primary works, English translations, and selected critical studies. An effort has been made to provide more extensive bibliographical information for the lesser-known authors. EVA MARTIN SARTORI is Associate Professor of Central Reference Services, Love Library, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She co-edited Women's Studies in Western Europe and contributed articles to Allegorica, College and Research Libraries, and Collection Management.

DOROTHY WYNNE ZIMMERMAN is Professor Emerita of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She edited George Sand's The Country Waif and May Wynne Lamb's Life in Alaska: The Reminiscences of a Kansas Woman, 1916-1919. Her articles have been published in George Sand Studies and Pacific Historian.

This book is extraordinary!! 51 major French female authors spanning from "The trobairitz" (c. 1170-1260) to Julia Kristeva (born 1941) are profiled with a highly informative biography, major themes (her subjects), and survey of criticism. Each ends with a bibliography including books that are translations of the author published in English and studies published on the author. These women are so fascinating you will probably agree with British legend George Eliot that "...in France alone if the writings of women were to be swept away, a serious gap would be made ni the national history." The women writers profiled here are Marie d'Agoult, SImone de Beauvoir, Isabelle de Charriere, Andree Chedid, Christine de Pizan, Colette, Sophie Cottin, Hellisenne de Crenne, Lucie Delarue-Mardrus, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Marie de Vichy-Chamrond, Marquise du Deffand; Pernette du Guillet, Claire de Duras, Judith Gautier, Stephanie-Felicite, Contesse de Genlis; Delphine Gay de Girardin, Marie Le Jars de Gournay, Francoise d'lessembourg d' Happoncourt de Graffigny, Benoite Groult, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva, Juliane von Krudener, Louise Labe, Marie-Madeleine Pioche de La Vergne, Comtesse de Lafayette; Violette Leduc, Julie de Lespinasse, Francoise Mallet-Joris, Marguerite de Navarre, Marie de France, Anan de Noailles, Rachilde, Marie Jeanne Riccoboni, Christiane Rochefort, Marie Jeanne Philipon (Manon) Roland de la Platiere, Francoise Sagan, George Sand, Nathalie Sarraute, ALbertine Sarrazin, Madeleine de Scudery, Sophie Rostopchine, Comtesse de Segur; Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sevigne; Germaine Necker, Baronne de Stael; Claudine-Alexandrine Guerin de Tencin, Flora Tristan, The Trobairitz, Marie-Catherine Desjardins de Villedieu, Simone Weil, Monique Wittig, and Marguerite Yourcenar. Each of these women enjoys an informative essay written by a scholar, most women themselves. It's sad so many of these icons of French literature have so few of their works now published in English, indeed many have yet to enjoy an English translation and several have not English editions published in two centuries! Even a legend like George Sand has not nearly enough of her work available on the American market. Even if you've never read a word published by many of these authors, you will no doubt be inspired by their gifts, their humanity (many were actively inviolved in charity work and progessive causes), and I strongly suspect you will seek out the works of at least a few of the authors which is the best compliment you can give a literary historian.

Mathematical games and puzzles are not included, and except for a few jumbled-language games where some Latin is used, English in employed throughout. Typical games covered are anagrams, alliteration, car games (making up words from car license plates), charades, guessing games, limericks, palindromes, rebuses, Scrabble, and the like. Entries vary in length, but usually give a definition, origin of the name if known, explanation of the game or the rules of play, a few examples if appropriate, usually some reference to similar games or puzzles, and finally a bibliography relating to that particular game. Black and white line drawings are used when necessary to make the entry clear. There is a more extensive bibliography of books relating to the topic in general at the end of the work, and it concludes with a brief index. ...
