Eighteen film genres, from gangster movies to screwball comedy, are examined in this anthology. Each chapter follows a set format: an historical/analytic overview, a bibliography with accompanying essay, and a filmography of the genre's key movies. Despite this structural unity, the individual efforts of the 14 contributors are ultimately uneven. Too much time is spent on inconsequential plot summaries and comparisons of films; most of the films singled out in the filmographies are not discussed; and the appearance of the same films in discussions of different genres casts unnecessary doubt on the validity of the genre concept. Each category is then divided into more diverse sections such as comedy: screwball, parody, clown etc. . . . Each chapter includes a historical/analytical overview, a bibliographic overview, and then concludes with a chronologically arranged, highly selective filmography, citing from 10 to 15 major examples of the genre with brief lists of credits. . . . One of the strengths of this guide is its coverage of more genres than other standard studies. . . .
