Based on extensive research in the libraries and archives of Paris, the book examines the impact of the Revolution's ideology of liberty and equality. When the men of 1789 wrote the Declaration of the Rights of Man, they were thinking in terms of man the male, not man the species. But there were some men and women who interpreted it in terms of all humanity. The outrage of these individuals over what they perceived as a discrepancy between the principles and the practice of the Revolution motivated them to produce some of the most unhesitating declarations of sexual equality that had ever been seen in history. Dr. Proctor demonstrates, however, these claims of equality were not simply ignored; they were categorically rejected by the mainstream revolutionaries.

The book examines the typical 18th-century concept of women as alien and in some ways inferior beings and traces the striking continuity between pre-Revolutionary and Revolutionary thought on the subject. Against this background, Proctor addresses a number of important questions: How widespread was the support for a movement in favor of sexual equality? What was the response of the Revolution itself to demands for equal rights for women? How did the men of the French Revolution justify the contradiction between their suppression of women and the ideologies for which they claimed to be fighting? To arrive at the answers, an abundance of material produced in France in the 18th century is identified and analyzed, and cited in an extensive bibliography of original sources. What finally emerges is not only a clearer picture of the French Revolution and its attitude toward women, but a deeper understanding of the ambivalent attitudes toward women that still affect our society today. This book will be an important resource for courses in European history, the French Revolution, and women's studies, as well as a valuable reference for college, university, and public libraries.

As a future graduate student of 18th century literature, focusing on women writers of the period, I consider Proctor's book as a very well researched work on the position of women before and after the French Revolution of 1789. The 18th century did not offer much to women, who were regarded by the tradition, religion and laws of man as inferior beings. Then the Revolution comes claiming that human beings are born equal and should be regarded as such by the society. But when women come to join the revolutionary movement and try claim their rightful place as equal human beings, they are met by ridicule and harsh rejection. The argument that Candice Proctor tries to make is that, altough with the Revolution, the situation of women seems to be improving for a while, by 1793 regresses so much that it is worse than before 1789. And that is not surprising. Since Ancient Greece, men traditionally blamed women for most evils in the world and the situation does not change with the Revolution. Furthermore, the philosophers of the Enlightenment (with the notable exception of Condorcet) do not seem to care much abot equality between sexes, and without their support in a era when philosophers are the ones who change the world, women do not have chances of winning anyway. Proctor's book is very well argumented through quotes from the most important names of the period, men and women. For anybody interested in 18th century French history this book would do a wonderful job in presenting the position of women in the French society of the period.

The works chosen are set in England where the writers and their characters experience a double displacement, the alienation of the exiled in the country that once colonized their own islands. They are outsiders: unwelcome in Prospero's home country.

The novels dramatize the theme of physical and psychological exile. Rhys's characters need mirrors in which they search for an assurance of identity; Lamming's are torn by the conflict inherent in the tragic sense of life; and Selvon's ironic language expresses the deepest sense of exile: exile from one's own self. Other Caribbean writers are included in the analysis, and the volume concludes by examining contemporary writers for whom Caliban's role in literature appears to be changing. Novelists like Earl Lovelace and Jamaica Kincaid demonstrate that it is possible to be an outsider in one's own country, and that issues of class can be as corrosive as issues of race. The focus has moved beyond physical exile, but the spirit and strength of Caliban continue to pervade the new literature. In giving expression to their anguish, both the earlier and new Caribbean writers have created highly interesting and successful fiction. This well crafted thematic study of Caribbean literature will be of great value to students, teachers, scholars, and readers of Third World, post-colonial, and multicultural literature.

Part I primarily discusses issues arising from the interface between institutional aims and individual alienation. DOW MARMUR is the Senior Rabbi at Holy Blossom Temple, Toronto, Canada. His special concern is contemporary Jewish thought. He defines himself as a teacher and a popularizer, not a scholar. His previous books, Beyond Survival and Walking Toward Elijah were published in 1982 and 1988, respectively. His journal articles have focused on the Holocaust, antisemitism, and the relationship between Christians and Jews.

MARY E. PAPKE is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her areas of specialization include late nineteenth and early twentieth century literature by American women and feminist theory. She is the author of Verging on the Abyss: The Social Fiction of Kate Chopin and Edith Wharton (Greenwood, 1990).

The first two chapters provide background, divide the existing methods of estimation of disequilibrium models into two categories, and explain the estimation methods for the basic model that belongs to the first category. The next three chapters explain the estimation methods for the directional, quantitative, and generalized stochastic models of the second category. Various methods for testing and evaluating equilibrium versus disequilibrium hypotheses are investigated in chapter six. Chapter seven examines the assumptions on which the models are formulated and discusses some alternative specifications of the disequilibrium models. The final chapters provide analyses of the economics and econometrics of the multi-market models and illustrate how some simple estimation methods can be used to estimate the disequilibrium formulations of the U. S. labor market. This is an important volume that will aid in the achievement of methodological consistency between analytical philosophy and the estimation methods in the applied work on disequilibrium economics.

About the Author

V. K. SRIVASTAVA is Professor in the Department of Statistics at Lucknow University. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, and is a life member of the Academy and the Indian Econometric Society. He has published more than 100 articles on statistical inference in econometrics in journals of international repute. In addition, he is the coauthor of Seemingly Unrelated Regression Equation Models: Estimation and Inference (1987).

The book includes chronologically arranged entries on each of the games from 1896 to the Centennial games planned for 1996, and the Olympic Games planned for 1998 in Nagano, Japan, and 2000 in Sydney. Entries focus on such information as site selection, political questions, controversies, collateral events, changes in programming, and political and economic consequences of the games―all information that is not available in other reference works on the Olympics.

Adding another dimension, the appendixes provide biographical profiles of the members of the International Olympic Committee and an entry on the United States Olympic Committee. The volume also provides information on Olympic films and a general bibliography.
