SACHI SRI KANTHA is a researcher at the Japan Institute for Control of Aging. A biochemist by training, he maintains an active interest in the history of science and has written articles on Einstein and other scientists. Recent events in Punjab and growing Sikh migration have increased interest in Sikh studies, necessitating a bibliography that would capture the burgeoning literature of the past few years. The present work, Sikhism and the Sikhs: An Annotated Bibliography, includes books and journal articles published in English since 1965 that are either devoted exclusively to or have an emphasis on Sikhism and the Sikhs. Each entry is annotated.

The bibliography is divided into seven chapters: general works, Sikh history, works on the Sikh gurus, Sikh scriptures and philosophy, Sikh politics and social-economic conditions, Sikhs abroad, and source materials. Within each chapter, entries are listed by author or issuing agency and include complete bibliographic information. The entries are numbered consecutively throughout the book. The work is completed by author, title, and subject index. This unique and comprehensive bibliography will be an important addition to the reference collections of academic, public, and special libraries.

?This annotated bibliography of 1,150 entries, divided into 7 chapters, includes books and journal articles published in English since 1965. Most of the annotations are concise and to the point. Individual author, title, and subject indexes provide excellent access to the numbered entries. The author states in her introduction that recent political events in Punjab and increased interest in Sikh migration abroad have necessitated this publication for recent literature not included in Ganda Singh's A Selected Bibliography of the Sikhs and Sikhism (Amritsar, 1965) or Hakam Singh's Sikhs Studies: A Classified Bibliography of Printed Books in English (Patiala, 1982). Only 152 of Rai's 1,150 entries, however, deal with these two topics, and only 19 of these are journal articles. Indeed, the entire bibliography contains articles from only four journals, the Journal of Religious Studies and three others devoted exclusively to Sikhism. The relatively few entries on recent events and the small number of journals covered calls somewhat into question the author's rationale for the need for this bibliography. Although the primary subject of this series is religion, additional articles from a wider selection of journals, especially for the chapters dealing with social science topics, would have increased considerably the value on the Sikhs. Recommended for university libraries with substantial South Asian collections.?-Choice

You never know what you're going to get when you try to save a few bucks and order an "as new" condition book.
I recently ordered an "as new" boxed set of CDs. The package arrived, smelling of cigars, and with unsealed CDs.
Luckily, this discography (which is difficult to get) was in perfect condition, arrived on time, and didn't smell of cigars!

This history first analyzes the development of German infantry tactics and the role of the Storm Battalions and then examines the British attempt to adopt the German defensive systems and points to reasons for flaws in the British doing so. In comparing and contrasting the British and German armies, Samuels outlines the key concepts on which the German defensive system was based and analyzes how forces were trained and leadership was decentralized to produce a dynamic and flexible system. British efforts to adopt the key concepts failed because leadership was centralized and poor training contributed also to combat ineffectiveness.

The book is well written and supports its main argument skillfully. The arguments demonstrate why the British Army appeared to be made up of "Lions led by donkeys." The failure of the book is that it does not explain why Germany was defeated in spite of its better military leadership. My view is that German failure is rooted in a tactical failure and in a strategic error. The tactical error was the failure to develop counter-battery artillery fire as effective as that of the Allied armies. The strategic error was its failure to maintain focus on the "Schwerpunckt," the critical point. In English terms this was a failure to properly "select and maintain the aim," a long established first principle of war. The initial aim of Operation Michael was to drive the British into the sea and deny them the Channel ports. Because of the initial success of Michael, the aim was changed to splitting the French and British armies. However, an earlier failure in "selection and maintenance of the aim" was leaving about a million soldiers in the East in pursuit of more captured land. An extra 500,000 soldiers for Michael could have won the war for Germany.

Following the withdrawal of British forces at Dunkirk and the fall of France, the Battle of Britain pitted some 2,800 Luftwaffe aircraft against some 650 serviceable RAF fighter aircraft. For the next four months Britain faced daily attacks against airfields and military installations, ports, and civilian and industrial centers. The failure of the Luftwaffe to overwhelm and destroy the RAF undercut German efforts to mount an invasion of Britain, and by November the airwar shifted to the Blitz phase, the attempt to destroy civilian morale through attacks on urban centers and airfields, which was to last essentially for the rest of the war.

Dangerous Sky attempts to bring together all the main sources published through 1989 dealing with the battle. Following a concise, yet detailed, biographical essay, Ms. Schultz provides documentation on Ann Sothern's career (both as Sothern and Harriette Lake) in films, theatre, radio, television, and on disc. (She even includes a listing of products which the actress has endorsed!) There is also a more-than-400 entry, annotated bibliography, which is quite extraordinary in its breadth and depth. What I like about this book is that its author never comes up with the obvious. Following a concise, yet detailed, biographical essay, Ms. Schultz provides documentation on Ann Sothern's career (both as Sothern and Harriette Lake) in films, theatre, radio, television, and on disc. (She even includes a listing of products which the actress has endorsed!) There is also a more-than-400 entry, annotated bibliography, which is quite extraordinary in its breadth and depth. What I like about this book is that its author never comes up with the obvious. A Must Have For The True Ann Sothern Fan!!!

This has to be the best guide of all to anything related to Ann Sothern. Excellent source (and checklist) is helping start a collection. VERY WELL-WRITTEN and great restoration photography!Schultz is by far, the queen of Bio-bibliographies, her research is unsurpassable! Definitely worth every penny of your investment!!!

Very Over-Priced

This is not writing but arranging...copies of articles, reviews, etc. from a variety of sources. As such, it may provide a 'service,' but these are not real biography. There are several of these 'arranger-writers' out there. The real problem is the price of these 'books.' Outrageously over-priced.
