About the Author

DALE E. FLOYD is a historian with the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program. Previously he was an archivist in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Office of History. Mr. Floyd specializes in military architecture and 19th century military history. Some of his previous publications include A World Bibliography of Armed Land Conflict from Waterloo to World War I (1979) and United States Coast Defense 1775-1950: A Bibliography (1985).

JEFFREY THOMAS is a freelance drummer/percussionist and a composer of percussion music. Trained as an ethnomusicologist, his thesis was A History of Pan and the Evolution of the Steel Band in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition he has published articles on related subjects in journals and reference books.

"Dilemmas in the Study of Information: Exploring the Boundaries of Information Science is by no means quite as simple. It is a complex, and too often complicated, examination of a wide range of the information problems that we as imperfect, reasoning--but not rational--human beings face as we attempt to use, and too often misuse, information. It is an examination that is made more complex by a discussion that concentrates on considering the work of some of the more difficult to understand philosophers and librarians, such as Popper and Dervin, respectively, in an idiosyncratic approach that ranges widely over such dilemmas as human imperfection, information ignored, the quality of information, information overload, and unknown information. Don't be put off by the complexity of Neill's arguments or the apparent difficulty of following his train of thought, which sometimes wanders into fascinating byways. What is hidden here are important elements of the same basic issues that Stieg raises. One needs to stay with it and take this book in small doses. Luckily, the complexity of Neill's arguments is made much more acceptable by the grace and wit with which he writes. He places his own work into a delightful perspective when he concludes, 'Today the sun is warm, and I intend to take my lunch to the high bank of the river, sit by the tumbling waters, and absorb the odors of spring.' We should all do the same from time to time."-Library Journal

About the Author

DAVID J. BERTUCA is an Associate Librarian in the University Libraries, State University of New York at Buffalo. His interest in 18th- and 19th-century American history has enabled him to research topics such as the World's Columbian Exposition, providing connections between the Fair and the period when it was held.

DONALD K. HARTMAN is a Reference Librarian at Lockwood Memorial Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research interests include subject access to fiction, online data base searching, and world's fairs. He is the author of several journal articles and editor of Fairground Fiction: Detective Stories of the World's Columbian Exposition.

SUSAN M. NEUMEISTER is head of bibliographic control in the acquisitions department of Central Technical Services at the State University of New York at Buffalo./e She is editor-in-chief of the OLAC Newsletter, a quarterly publication of the Online Audiovisual Catalogers, Inc.

BARBARA STUHLER, prior to her retirement, was Professor and Executive Associate Dean, Continuing Education and Extension (now the College of Continuing Education) at the University of Minnesota./e From the 1950s through the 1970s, she served on the state and national boards of the League of Women Voters and served as the League's representative on the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO. In recent years she has devoted her energies to writing women's history and to increasing the representation of women in politics.

This is a very interesting book on the concept of the body in the horror film. Badley uses popular theories like psychanalysis, the female gothic and "the Birth of the Clinic", in order to situate the image of the body (most particularly, the female body) in today's society. This book is aimed at the film sholar who is particularly interested in the horror/gothic genre (in film and literature) and women studies. She is a lot more easy to read than Barbara Creed!

Following the editor's introductory essay, the work is divided into 7 sections: Fantasy and Discontinuity, Theory of National Fantasy--Tradition and Invention, Fantastic Vision in Children's Literature, Science Fiction and Fantasy Films, Fusion, Transfusion, and Transgression in the Fantastic, The Fantastic and Science, and The Fantastic World--Space and Time. Individual essays within these major divisions zero in on specific works of fantasy; offer a psychology of fantasy writers; analyze language; assess fantasy from a national perspective; and investigate Christian horror in fiction. The final two sections delineate the border between fantasy and reality--in science and in relation to space and time.

Among the outstanding contributors are Brian Aldiss, novelist, poet, and critic, author of more than two dozen books-- many of which are considered science fiction classics; Vivian Sobchack, science fiction film critic and writer on semiotics and phenomenology; and Nancy Willard, author of prize-winning novels, collected stories, poetry, and children's books.
