Since more than 90 percent of all Black students receive instruction in public schools, it is perhaps not surprising that researchers have paid scant attention to the educational status of the minority who have attended independently funded schools. The authors of this book present the first systematic treatment of the subject, looking at all aspects of the educational experiences of the Black children in private and parochial schools, and they explore the implications of private schooling for educational policy and future research. The editors' introduction provides an overview of the educational situation of Black children, focusing on the interface between the children, their families, and academic achievement in their schools. The organization of the volume reflects the diversity of private school types attended by Black children.

Issues discussed are related to Black parent and student experiences in desegregated elite private schools, parochial schools, and predominantly Black private schools. The parental involvement in the schools is addressed as well as alternative types of organizational support systems for the Black students. About the Author

MICHAEL KNEE is Associate Librarian and the Physical, Mathematical, and Computer Sciences Bibliographer for the University at Albany, SUNY. He is the compiler of several cumulations of two newspaper indexes: Index to Albany Times Union and Index to the Grand Forks Herald. He has also written many reviews and articles.

STEVEN D. ATKINSON is Associate Librarian and Assistant Coordinator of the Computer Search Service of the University Libraries at the University at Albany. He has published over ten articles and recently coedited a collection of sixteen essays entitled Women Online (forthcoming).

Analysis of La Follette's Major Speeches

Burgchardt does a somewhat interesting job here with a fairly dull topic, in analyzing themes in the speeches of Robert La Follette, Sr. Some historical and biographical information is nicely interwoven, but the oratory is the major topic. Burgchardt shows how La Follette often relied on the condemnation of a great and cunning evil seeking to destroy morality, whether it be Iago in Othello, corporatists, oleomargarine or railroad owners. The speeches don't "read" all that well and probably were more interesting to hear first-hand, but the book overall is an interesting study. Not something I would buy to own, but I don't regret the time I spent reading it either.
