Strange Shadows: The Uncollected Fiction and Essays of Clark Ashton Smith (Contributions to the Study of Science Fiction and Fantasy)By

Strange Shadows opens a window into the dark, visionary worlds of Clark Ashton Smith, whose verbal black magic was a significant force in the American science fiction and fantasy movement of the 1930s. This annotated collection of his previously unpublished works provides a unique opportunity to savor the full range of Smith's literary contribution. Featuring fantasies and ironic short stories, prose-poems, plays, unfinished stories, and more than 100 story synopses, it offers valuable documentation and commentary on the work of one of the most distinctive and consistently interesting modern masters of the fantasy genre.

An introduction by Robert Bloch (the author of Psycho) examines Smith's work and places it in historical perspective. Among the highlights of the collection are the satirical title story; variant drafts of two of Smith's most famous stories--The Coming of the White Worm and The Beast of Averoigne--and a play entitled The Dead Will Cuckold You, which has been hailed as a masterpiece. The editor's annotations include extensive quotations from Smith's correspondence to H. P. Lovecraft, August Derleth, and other important fantasy authors, together with textual commentary and discussion of connections between published and unpublished works. Information on lost writings and lists of published story titles, characters, and place names are supplied. An important resource for fantasy readers and scholars, this book will appeal to those with an interest in dark fantasy, science fiction, and the history of American science fiction.

Review
"Perhaps the hardest review to write is the one, where the reader is confronted with a near-perfect book. I suppose if I wanted to quibble with type-styles and binding I might be able to find something to criticise in Strange Shadows, but otherwise I find nothing wrong with this book; it's everything I would expect Clark Ashton Smith's last prose collection to be, and more. I say last because this volume collects the remainder of Smith's fiction, story synopses, unfinished tales, essays, and plays known to exist. And for this task, the editors--in particular Steve Behrends--deserve our thanks. Behrends has done more for the revival of Smith's reputation than any one individual, and all in a very short period of time. . . . Strange Shadow is one of the first true scholarly editions of an author's work of weird fiction, something which hasn't even been done with Lovecraft's work yet. Considering this, Strange Shadows becomes more and more important on each level we look at it. Of course, though, for those who aren't interested in variants, these additions can be passed over easily, making the volume enjoyable at all levels. . . . Extensive notes are offered, as well as three interesting appendices: "The Lost Worlds of Clark Ashton Smith" by Steve Behrends looks at the non-extent works by Smith that we know were completed; "Nemesis of the Unfinished" is the outline by Don Carter which was the basis of the story co-authored by the two; and "The Black Book: Addenda" includes material not used in the Arkham House edition of Smith's The Black Book (1979). If the sheer bulk of material featured in Strange Shadows doesn't intrigue you, then the diversity and quality should. For most readers, Iam sure the high point will be the lengthy story fragment The Infernal Star, ' which some will readily classify as a Lovecraft Mythos' tale and is replete with mentions of The Necronomicon. Whether you are a Smith fan or a scholar of weird fiction, this volume has something for everyone. And while the high price of the volume is the only aspect of it I can quarrel with, the $39.95 will be well spent; how many of us have spent more than that on some out-of-print volume that we really didn't need?. . . Strange Shadows is a necessity, and worth the price many times over. Strange Shadows is a recessity, and worth the price many times over."-Studies in Weird Fiction

The Critics' Canon: Standards of Theatrical Reviewing in America (Great American Orators,), by Richard Hudson Palmer

Palmer clearly states that his purpose is to explain 1the ways of critics to theatre practitioners, the ways of theatre to inexperienced reviewers, and the dynamic convergence of theatre and critic to anyone interested in theatre.' . . . The work is a well-written `primer' for writers and it will be useful primarily to performers who object to unfavorable `criticsm' without understanding the nature and purpose of reviewing. Accessible to general readers and undergraduates. Choice

Palmer begins with an examination of the theatrical review as a medium for informing and entertaining theatregoers, documenting events of artistic of community importance, and supporting theatre through critical evaluation and publicity. He next comments on how journalistic pressures affect reviewers. Citing brief examples from hundreds of reviews, the author devotes a chapter to each of the elements that needs to be covered in a review, including performers, script, direction, music, and choreography, together with stage and lighting design and other physical aspects of the production. The final chapter develops criteria for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a theatrical review, based on aesthetic standards, the cultural tastes of theatregoers, and the interests of the community. Palmer's experience as both a theatre professional and a journalist gives him an intimate understanding of the antagonism that often develops between reviewers and those who feel themselves to be the target of irresponsible criticism. His book provides a clear perspective on theatrical matters and guidelines that will help to improve standards of reviewing and create an appreciation of the essential relationship between the theatre and its critics.

Review
"Palmer clearly states that his purpose is to explain "the ways of critics to theatre practitioners, the ways of theatre to inexperienced reviewers, and the dynamic convergence of theatre and critic to anyone interested in theatre." He follows common practice of not distinguishing between critic and reviewer, but he notes that a review focuses on a specific theatre event and carries a time value, whereas criticism takes a broader, more theoretical view and commonly deals with an ideal performance or a script apart from the occasion. In the first two chapters Palmer, who has both theater and journalism experience, defines the nature of reviewing and focuses on the journalistic considerations as well as the restrictive obligations of the reviewer to his readers, the theater event being examined, and the community/media sponsor. The remainder of the book is devoted to aspects to be considered in reviewing: the script, the actors, the director, and technical and production contributions. The final chapter suggests solutions to some common reviewing faults. Examples of reviews of the 1986-87 theatre season in America illustrate the points made. The work is a well-written "printer" for writers and it will be useful primarily to performers who object to unfavorable "criticism" without understanding the nature and purpose of reviewing. Accessible to general readers and undergraduates."-Choice

It sets out to create standards for theater reviewing and, if you ever wanted to review theater or find the best reviewer around, a look at this book is all you need. Chapter 10 offers Strengths and Weaknesses of a Theatrical Review, ' a 13-page explanation of what to look for in a review--how to spot a theater reviewer or a theater bullthrower. With ticket prices soaring in our area, it's a useful way to get to know your local reviewer's priorities and prejudices. Wonderful stuff. We recommend it highly."-Fairfield County Advocate

Parody as Film Genre: Never Give a Saga an Even Break (Contributions to the Study of Popular Culture), by Wes D. Gehring

Parody is the least appreciated of all film comedy genres and receives little serious attention, even among film fans. This study elevates parody to mainstream significance. A historical overview places the genre in context, and a number of basic parody components, which better define the genre and celebrate its value, are examined. Parody is differentiated from satire, and the two parody types, traditional and reaffirmation, are explained. Chapters study the most spoofed genre in American parody history, the Western; pantheon members of American Film Comedy such as The Marx Brothers, W. C. Fields, Mae West, and Laurel and Hardy; pivotal parody artists, Bob Hope and Woody Allen; Mel Brooks, whose name is often synonymous with parody; and finally, parody in the 1990s. Films discussed include Destry Rides Again (1939), The Road to Utopia (1945), My Favorite Brunette (1947), The Paleface (1948), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), Blazing Saddles (1974), Young Frankenstein (1974), Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993) and Scream (1996).

This examination of parody will appeal to scholars and students of American film and film comedy, as well as those interested in the specific comedians discussed and the Western genre. Gehring's work will also find a place in American pop culture studies and sociological studies of the period from the 1920s to the 1990s. The book is carefully documented and includes a selected bibliography and filmography.

The Late 19th Century U.S. Army, 1865-1898: A Research Guide (Research Guides in Military Studies), by Joseph Dawson

A strong addition to the existing military history reference literature and to its series. . . . Dawson's research guide is more useful than a standard bibliography, and much more thorough for the time period covered than [other] sources. . . . Dawson builds his guide around more than 1,100 bibliographic entries, many of which have brief, descriptive annotations. The citations, arranged topically in eight chapters, are drawn from books, periodicals, and dissertations. A ninth chapter covers pertinent government documents and manuscript collections. Author and subject indexes and four useful appendixes are included. There is a fine introductory essay: the preface lists and briefly describes 50 top secondary sources selected from the larger body of literature. These features truly enhance the bibliographic core of the book and make it a guide useful to general readers, upper-level undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars. Choice

The period between the Civil War and the end of the nineteenth century was a time of hard choices for the U.S. Army and those who led it. The federal government thrust numerous responsibilities upon the military, including pacifying the Indians, patrolling the defeated Confederacy, suppressing striking laborers, and supervising national parks. This comprehensive bibliography focuses on this period of military history, cataloging, surveying, and appraising the substantial body of contemporary and historical literature that traces the evolution of the U.S. Army from 1865 to 1898. As the largest single-volume reference work of its type, the book covers all major aspects of Army activities, and contains annotations on 80 percent of its entries.

Following a series foreword by Roger J. Spiller and a brief introduction, the volume begins with an extensive survey of government documents and manuscript collections. Included here is a wide variety of U.S. government publications pertaining to the Army, many from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Subsequent chapters group sources under bibliographic topics, such as general secondary works, fiction, and memoirs and contemporary accounts, as well as under subjects that refer to the Army's activities. These include the Army and Reconstruction, the Indian-fighting Army, forts and post life, the late 19th century Army, and coastal defense. A series of appendixes provides a period chronology, list commanding generals and secretaries of war, and chart army strength. A set of author and subject indexes conclude the work. The Late 19th Century U.S. Army will be an important addition to the collections of public and academic libraries, and a useful resource tool for courses in U.S. history and military history.

Victims and Survivors: Displaced Persons and Other War Victims in Viet-Nam, 1954-1975 (Contributions to the Study of World History), by Lo

The massive population displacements and generation of civilian war casualties that occurred between 1954 and 1975 disastrously weakened the fabric of South Vietnamese society, produced widespread demoralization, and contributed to the country's defeat by North Viet-Nam. This new work is the first systematic documentation of the human consequences of the Viet-Nam War. Based on American, Vietnamese, and international records, as well as a wealth of personal experience and eyewitness accounts, it examines the scope of the tragedy, what was done to cope with it, and what lessons can be drawn from the experience.

Wiesner argues that the tragedy of the war itself was appreciably worsened by forced relocations and that this suffering could not have been relieved, because the amount of land on which the largely rural evacuees could be safely resettled was repeatedly diminished by Communist incursions and the demands of combat. Meanwhile, American bombing of the North, much less destructive to civilians than fighting and bombing in the South, was used by the totalitarian regime to instill hatred against the United States and its South Vietnamese ally. When in 1975 the North Vietnamese overran the entire South, masses of Vietnamese, for the first time in their history, fled from their country.

Review
"A decade after the US war in Vietnam ended, a thriving trade in books on the war flourishes. Although the majority of these works address the American wartime experience and the reasons for the US defeat, Wiesner's book seeks to assess the impact of the war on dislocated Vietnamese civilians. Such a humanitarian concern is a welcome contribution to the field. Timely contribution.

The Vietnam War instigated by Ho Chi Minh caused 12 million people to be forcibly relocated: one out of two South Vietnamese had been a refugee at some point in their lives.
Anti-communist ideology was the cause of the 1954-55 exodus during which one million left North Vietnam for the South. From 1966-72, artillery, bombing, communist repression forced peasants to leave their villages to migrate to cities. The atrocities of the Viet Cong during and after the 1968 Tet attack caused people "to vote with their feet": they ran away as soon as they heard communists were coming. This was also the cause of the 1975 diaspora during which two million people escaped Vietnam on rickety boats. At least 500,000 others drowned or died from other causes at sea.

The author who is to be congratulated for his in-depth analysis of this important problem.

With the cooperation of Benchley family members, and using diaries and correspondence and much archival material, Gehring has written a fresh and lively biography of humorist Robert Benchley. Known for his development of the comic anti-hero in essays, columns, film scripts, as a screen actor, and on stage and radio, Benchley emerges as a fascinating individual whose significance as a pivotal American humorist is fully documented.

Benchley's times and places--including New York's Algonquin Round-Table set of the 1920s and Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s--are colorfully depicted, and there are interesting glimpses of friends and colleagues such as Dorothy Parker, S. J. Perelman, Donald Ogdon Stewart, and Groucho Marx. The flavor of Benchley comes through not only in observations and anecdotes but in a section reprinting ten of his letters, six of his Life Drama columns, and a collage of his published comments on favorite comedians. Author Gehring also provides an annotated bibliography of Benchley's books and selected shorter works and a bibliography of books and articles about him, a chronology of events highlighting his life and career, an annotated filmography, and a selected discography. Illustrations include photographs spanning Benchley's career and reproductions of his own sketches and cartoons. Mindful of Benchley's warning not to get too serious over laughter, Gehring has produced a thorough critical and bibliographical examination of a comic persona, which is also a fond celebration of a great humorist.

"Mr. B" not bad but could "B" better
By A. W. Senior
Wes Gehring contributes a great deal to Benchley scholarship, being the first Benchley biographer to sift through the letters and extant diaries. His investigations have been extensive, and aside from beating the whole "antihero" theme to death, he offers intelligent commentary on Benchley's life and work. But this self-professedly scholarly study (listed at so high a price) is full of typographical and other errors that a good line-editor and/or fact checker should have corrected. For example, within two pages of the main text, Gehring has Benchley writing the introduction to S. J. Perelman's "Strictly for Hunger." Another howler occurs when Gehring inserts a note into Benchley's letter describing Artie Shaw's near-fatal illness: "Shaw lived until 1991." This would no doubt surprise Mr. Shaw, who is still alive and well at this writing. Some of the difficulty may have originated with Gehring's (and his secretary's) unfamiliarity with the computer--he goes on at length about his trouble with the machine. This ineptitude is perhaps meant to evoke the spirit of Benchley, who admittedly could not change the ribbon in his typewriter without becoming "festooned like Laocoon." The difference is that Benchley's fumbling was funny. Gehring's is just irritating, particularly if you paid full price for the book. (I didn't.) This book is for the true Benchley fan, who will be able to wade through the mistakes to find the nuggets of new scholarship that made it ultimately worth reading.

Police, Firefighter, and Paramedic Stress: An Annotated Bibliography (Bibliographies and Indexes in Psychology), by John J. Miletich

Public safety professionals work together in life-and-death situations. During natural or transportation disasters, industrial accidents, shootings, suicides or dozens of other instances, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics are called upon to assist both injured and uninjured people. Although often romanticized in television series and in films, the real-life tasks of public safety professionals are usually unpleasant--restraining violent individuals and removing accident, homicide, and suicide victims from death scenes--and always highly stressful. They are frequently subjected to additional stress when their efforts are criticized by family members of the injured or deceased. Although stress can be harmful, even fatal, police officers, firefighters, and paramedics can have more productive and satisfying lives when they learn to positively control stress, rather than be controlled by it. This English language bibliography consisting of more than 700 references, covering the time period 1945 to early 1989, can help these and other professionals manage stress more effectively. Source publications, all of which are annotated, include books, articles, conference proceedings, theses, government publications, and dissertations. The bibliography section is composed of six chapters addressing psychological and physiological factors, the family, substance abuse, accidents, and suicide, with references arranged alphabetically by author surname. A list of acronyms and author and subject indexes complete the work.

Of paramount importance to police officers, firefighters, and paramedics as well as their families, this bibliography will provide legislators, physicians, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and sociologists with extensive and substantial documentation on the stress-filled work lives of these public safety professionals.

"Occupational stress experienced by public safety professionals is the object of considerable research and is a popular subject for treatment in the mass media. Miletich has compiled several social science bibliographies for Greenwood. This one provides more than 700 annotated citations to the international scholarly and professional literature published since 1945 on stress among such workers. . . . Entries are arranged by author under six topics: psychological aspects, physiological factors, family, substance abuse, accidents, and suicide. Research methodologies and findings are briefly covered in the descriptive annotations. Author and subject indexes facilitate access, the latter consisting of about 1,000 subjects drawn from descriptive terms found in the annotations. More current and comprehensive than Catherine J. Matthew's Police Stress (Toronto, 1979) and William G. Bailey's chapter of annotated citations on stress and endangerment in his bibliography Police Science, 1964-84 (1986), this bibliography will be useful to academicians, practitioners, and students in counseling, criminology, public administration, and social work."-Choice

Very disapointing to me, as I was looking for something I could use to lower my stress on the job, and this book is not it. I found another book that fit my needs. This book would probably be good for research.
