Valuable for Students and Bible Collectors

No other volume of this type offers such comprehensive coverage, yet its idiosyncratic cataloging methods stymie its usefulness. Nor are the accompanying comments to various versions as informative as Herbert. And watch for an inexpensive used copy as the cost for new is prohibitive.

An Excellent Resource for English Bible Version Study

I am actively involved in studying English Bible versions and have been for about 15 years. I am currently working on a book that will probably be called "The Encyclopedia of English Bible Versions."

This book is the most complete listing of English Bible versions that I have found. I have, of course, Herbert's "Historical Catalogue of Printed Bibles," Hills' "English Bible in America" and many others. But Chamberlin's book is more complete, more accurate and more helpful than any of those.

It lists more unique versions than any other work. It is also very helpful if you are researching a particular book of the Bible. He has listed every version that he has found whether it is in a commentary, magazine, or a book.

The cost of this book is high and that kept me from buying for quite some time. Now that I've gotten it I must say it is worth the investment. There simply is no other book that covers as many versions as this one.

An Indispensable Reference

Chamberlin's Catalogue of English Bible translations is the most complete bibliography of English Bible translations ever complied anywhere! Importantly, it contains much information about each translation, often quoting from the translation itself. Included is the publication data along with a complete publication history. If the translation includes only parts of the Bible, the listing includes the contents. Also, the annotations are very numerous. Some translations contain the apocrypha and the apocryphal books, and this is noted. The listings also often include some information about the translator. Some versions are not actually translations because they are not original, but are modifications of the King James Version, and if this it the case, this fact is noted. This 899 page work also has a 41 page, double column comprehensive index. It contains 43 additional pages of excellent preface material, notes, etc. This work is an indispensable reference for all Bible scholars, Bible translators, Bible collectors, Bible historians, and dealers in rare books.

This volume provides, in alphabetical format, information about those individuals, institutions, and events that most affected the relationships between the United States and Asia. The dictionary focuses on individuals who contributed in a significant way to U.S.-Asian relations, especially those who left a written record of their experiences. The book covers all countries of Asia, except those of the Middle East, which are in a separate volume by Shavit.

Shavit has succeeded in making the information highly accessible as well as comprehensive. The front matter includes a list of abbreviations, place names, and a chronology. A short introduction then leads into the dictionary itself. The contributors describe activities undertaken at eight colleges and universities as part of the Articulation Project. Launched in January 1987, the project was designed first to identify the factors, circumstances, and attitudes that prevent study abroad from being an important and integral part of the total undergraduate degree program. A second goal was to identify and encourage institutional strategies and policies aimed at eliminating or at least reducing these obstacles. The underlying aim of the project and the goal of this collective work is to strengthen international studies and encourage the internationalization of undergraduate education in the United States by making study abroad more important to and recognized within it. Educators committed to these ideals will find this volume essential reading.

About the Author

DAVID WILLIAM FOSTER is Regent's Professor of Spanish at Arizona State University, where he is Director of Spanish Graduate Studies. He has published extensively on Hispanic literature, with an emphasis on narrative and theater in Argentina and on Latin American popular culture. His previous Greenwood Press books are Peruvian Literature: A Bibliography of Secondary Sources (1981) and Puerto Rican Literature: A Bibliography of Secondary Sources (1981). More recently, he has authored Gay and Lesbian Themes in Latin American Literature (1991) and Essays in Latin American Cultural Diversity (1993).

In The Silent Holocaust, Butnaru, himself a survivor of the Romanian labor camps, provides a full account and demonstrates that anti-Semitism was a central force in Romania's history. He begins by examining the precarious status of Romanian Jewry in the years prior to World War I. He then reviews the period to the establishment in September, 1940, of the National Legionary State, a period when anti-Semitism became the unifying force in politics. The remainder of the book covers the Holocaust years, and reveals that Romania's premeditated mass murder of Jews was well underway before the Reich's gas chambers became operational. The Silent Holocaust has been called a work of epic and historical worth and it is invaluable for students of World War II, the Holocaust, and Jewish and Eastern European studies.

By reviewing historical and cultural biases against Jews and legislation that embodied anti-Semitism, Butnaru shows that government action to eliminate the Jews reflected the broadly held popular belief that Jews could be blamed for all troubles. Romania's early history and development are outlined, but the fascist legionary movement between the wars, German coalition, and leadership of Ion Antonescu during World War II are focal points. With its high detail and narrow focus, this study is for scholars of the region and larger collections.

Although he has collected a great deal of information about the Jews during the pre-Holocaust and Holocaust period in Romania, Butnaru, unfortunately, has not been able to take advantage of the altered conditions in the country of his birth. The purpose of the book is to present a viewpoint rather than an analysis of the events that it describes. About the Author

I. C. BUTNARU was in a Romanian labor camp during World War II and lectures on the Holocaust and the arts at Boston University. He was a member of the Society of Romanian Writers. Forbidden to write freely on political issues in Communist Romania, he immigrated to the United States in 1974. He is the author of five earlier books.

Through a close reading of these fantasies Honig demonstrates that although Victorian women were still being repressed in the home and the marketplace, the female figure in literature played a role that was quite different from the traditional stereotype of the meek, submissive wife and mother.

Breaking my Image of Victorian Children's Literature

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It stands out from the majority of scholarly works I've read because it's so well-written. Honig's clear, concise, and enjoyable writing makes this an easy read. And her analysis of the role of women in Victorian children's literature is extremely insightful and original. She's made me rethink my views on literature from this period. A must-read for anyone interested in literature and the novel.
