When the German army invaded Russia in June 1941, the United States' Lend-Lease system was already in place to aid friendly powers at war and thereby promote the defense of the U.S. Enacted so that the U.S. could lend war material to Britain, the system allowed the transfer of weapons, machinery, agricultural products, and other defense items. Although politically and practically difficult, Lend-Lease was also extended to the Soviets, and in Feeding the Bear, van Tuyll studies the rarely scrutinized subject of the military impact of Lend-Lease on Russian efforts to repel the Nazi invaders. In the post-war period, many histories, memoirs, scholarly studies, and polemics on the Eastern Front by German, American, and Soviet authors have appeared but no comprehensive American official history of the Lend-Lease program was ever published. Van Tuyll uses a wealth of data from many sources including some from the substantial Military Mission files, declassified as recently as 1983, to assess the long-neglected issue of the actual impact of Lend-Lease aid on Soviet victory on the Eastern Front. By synthesizing the many types of technical information, economic data, and statistics, van Tuyll is able to formulate challenging conclusions regarding the program's impact. The difficulty in making this assessment was compounded not only by an almost fifty-year perspective, but also because Soviet information on its military situation, army, or internal economic conditions was scarce and often dismissive of foreign aid. The Germans viewed their failure as due to weather, numbers, Hitler's errors, inadequate intelligence, or lack of gasoline and not to Soviet expertise in the immense offensives of 1943-1945.
Among the ten chapters there are considerations of the complicated Soviet view of Lend-Lease, analyses of the technical aspects, and explorations not only of the overall impact but also of the effect on decisive battles such as Stalingrad and Berlin. The introduction provides a thorough grounding in the background of the Lend-Lease program and surveys other treatments of the subject. The appendix contains over 45 valuable tables that provide data on every aspect of Lend-Lease, including exports by region, value of U.S. shipments to the Soviet Union, deliveries of food, clothing, and medicine, and estimated Soviet production capacity, among others. This is truly a landmark volume that will be consulted and read avidly by students and scholars of European and American History, and World War II in particular, as well as those involved with Military History, Soviet Studies, Soviet Economic History, and U.S.-Soviet Relations.

?Works concerning US aid to the Soviet Union during WW II have tended to focus more on its diplomatic repercussions rather than on its impact on the battlefield. For example, George Herring's Aid to Russia 1941-1946; Strategy Diplomacy and the Origins of the Cold War, as its subtitle implies, dealt with the aid question primarily in terms of its effect on events leading up to 1947. Van Tuyll has produced a well-written monograph attempting to measure American aid as it influenced military events. Although he claims that US aid certainly guaranteed an earlier Soviet triumph over Germany, it was not decisive in bringing about victory. This he credits to the Soviet production effort, although he concedes that Allied shipments of precious commodities such as aviation fuel and equipment such as aircraft and trucks helped fill important gaps in Russia's war effort. He concludes, The Soviet Union most likely would have survived without Lend Lease . . . but the war would have been much longer, the alliance less firm and the victory less complete.' The most complete book on the subject

Excellent read and most complete book on the subject that I have found on the topic. I was amazed to see all the lists from huge amounts of raw materials, the necessary chemicals to make explosives and especially TNT, steel plates, food, clothing, machinery, construction equipment, radios, flashlights, optics, electronics, telephone wire, tanks, trucks, trailers, tires, locomotives, rolling stock, rails, signaling equipment, aircraft, portable airstrips and 100 octane fuel. And, the lengths to which the Allies invested and built up infrastructure and interesting ways they took to get it all delivered. And, further how these materials enhanced the Soviets in capability. Even if many of the Soviet leaders at the time and even after the War where unappreciative and dismissive.
The amounts of raw material and equipment that the U.S., U.K. and Canada shipped to the Russians during World War II presented in this book to me is mind-boggling. And, this book makes an excellent case that without L-L the Soviets would have been hampered economically which would have translated into their military being constrained in almost every aspect of capability from logistics, command and control or to being able to raise the numbers of troops and equipment and units that was needed to stop the Germans offensively, let alone being able to get to Berlin when they did historically. - G

Good but dated

For when it was written it is great. Now that the Soviet Union has collapsed, new, more objective material must be available.
Lend Lease neither won the war nor was inconsequential. The problem is finding the right mid point. Declassified Soviet documents should shed some more light on this issue.
The Soviet Union paid a very high price for victory in the Great Patriotic War, but without the 350,000 trucks supplied by
the US it would have been much higher still.

Overrated

I've only read the first sixty pages of this book. Maybe, with time I will return to it. It was received by me with great anticipation because I had a hole in my War in the East repertoire concerning the methods used to get war materials to Stalin. So far, this book has been a repetitive series of statistics on what was sent and the fact that the Soviets continuelly downplayed the efforts made by the West. Over and over to adnauseam. I wearied of this exercise after awhile and layed the book aside. I am hoping that the large sum this book cost me will redeem itself with a rewarding reading experience when I return to it. I also bought RUSSIA'S LIFE-SAVER by Albert Weeks. I haven't been to it as yet to be able to give it as an alternative to this work.
