The subject of church and state is one intimately associated with the history of Christianity and Western civilization. Not limited to any one religious tradition, civilization, or period of history, the subject has historical and universal significance to all cultures and religious traditions throughout the world. This volume addresses the broader perspectives of religion and the state in the ancient world, in the biblical world of Judaism and Christianity, and in other religious traditions.

Attention is given to general works on church and state that treat the subject broadly, not limited to any particular nation, religious tradition, or single aspect of church-state relations. Additionally, there is material on major topics integrally related to church and state, such as civil disobedience, civil religion, liberation theology, patriotism, and nationalism. Finally, sources are included on religion in international affairs and interfaith relations, both necessarily linked to the subject of church and state, as well as religion and the economic order; religion and human rights and the effect of religion on war and peace.

Essentials of Contemporary Neo-Confucian Philosophy (Resources in Asian Philosophy and Religion), by Shu-hsien Liu

This volume is the follow-up to Understanding Confucian Philosophy: Classical and Sung-Ming, which presented the first two Epochs of Confucian philosophy. The third Epoch, presented in this book, is that of Contemporary Neo-Confucian philosophy. It notes a paradigm shift from the late Ming to the early Ch'ing, which shows us how the line of Sung-Ming Neo-Confucian philosophy was broken. Then, background information is given to answer the question of how the phoenix was reborn from the ashes; at the height of the iconoclast May Fourth Movement in 1919, Liang Sou-ming, the forerunner of the movement, developed his ideas about East-West cultures and their philosophies.

During the darkest moments of Chinese history, three generations of New Confucian scholars developed their ideas and achieved great scholarship. Shu-hsien Liu presents a framework of four groups to portray the movement. And, the philosophies of Fung Yu-lan, Hsuing Shih-li, Thome H. Fang, T'ang Chun-I, and Mou tsung-san are reviewed and analyzed. The international dimension of the third generation of New Confucians is also introduced. In the conclusion, Shu-hsien Liu comments on the relevance of this trend of thought today with a view toward the future.

?It is always a noteworthy event when the history of an intellectual movement is written by an eminent and publicly recognized member of that movement ... [T]his is a work that is of great value and usefulness. It succeeds in presenting twentieth century Neo-Confucianism in a succinct, thumbnail form that will be comprehensible to interested comparative philosophers, sinologists, or survey course undergraduates who are curious to know what this modern Confucianism movement is all about. As the only English language presentation of much of the material between its covers, it provides an invaluable service. As the work of one of the representative members of the tradition of thought it presents, it is a work of historical significance in its own right.?-Journal of Chinese Studies

Man Cannot Speak for Her: Volume II; Key Texts of the Early Feminists (Contributions in Women's Studies)From Praeger

The right to cast a ballot from a feminine hand occupied the attention and efforts of hundreds of women for more than a century in the US. In these two volumes, Campbell provides a basic understanding of two processes: the development of the rhetoric used by the women who argued for equal rights, and the constraints and sanctions applied to those women who affronted the norms of society's expectation that true women were seldom seen and never spoke in public. The first volume lays the foundation for the analysis of rhetorical style and content by its fine introduction and by a succession of chapters organized chronologically, with biographical sketches and excerpts from speeches. It includes a chapter specifically addressed to issues of sex, race, and class faced by African American women. Volume 2 is not a continuation of the first, but contains the texts on which the first volume is based. The biographical and historical sections are gracefully written and well organized, but the greatest value of the set lies in the actual words of the feminist leaders and Campbell's skillful analyses. This collection of key speeches by national leaders provides a vivid and accurate documentary history of American woman's rights and suffrage movement from its beginnings in the 1840s through 1920. Offering many rare and previously unpublished selections, it brings together the work of fifteen notable reformers who played central roles in shaping and directing the movement and in articulating the diverse issues and viewpoints that characterized it. The discourses reveal the strategies used by early woman's rights advocates in adapting their appeals to varied audiences, responding to opposition, and advancing their cause in the political arena.

Each of the twenty-six selections is annotated to supply historical information that is likely to be unfamiliar to contemporary readers. The earliest speeches deal primarily with anti-slavery platforms and the repressive patriarchal laws that gave men complete control over property, women, and children. Several speeches by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Sojourner Truth follow; Susan B. Anthony is represented by her famous speech in defense of her vote. Racial issues--especially lynching and Jim Crow laws--are addressed in speeches by Ida B. Wells and Mary Church Terrell. Speeches by Anna H. Shaw and Carrie Chapman Catt--leaders in the fight for woman suffrage--are also included. The volume ends with an address by Crystal Eastman laying out a feminist agenda that is pertinent today. This work and its companion volume make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the early woman's rights movement and the persuasive message it brought to the American people. It is a valuable source book for an introduction to women's studies or courses in American Public Address, women's rhetoric, and U.S. women's history.

Review
?The right to cast a ballot from a feminine hand occupied the attention and efforts of hundreds of women for more than a century in the US. In these two volumes Campbell (University of Minnesota) provides a basic understanding of two processes: the development of the rhetoric used by the women who argued for equal rights, and the constraints and sanctions applied to those women who affronted the norms of society's expectation that true women were seldom seen and never spoke in public. Every women's studies program must have this available. Upper-division undergraduates and above.?-Choice

Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements (Studies in Historiography; 3), by James B. Minahan

Russians are suppressing the Chechen; Ibo nationalism may yet tear Nigeria apart. With the end of the Cold War, any of the world's stateless peoples could be in tomorrow's headlines. This book provides an essential guide to the stateless nations suppressed or ignored during the Cold War. In more than 200 national surveys, the volume highlights the historical, political, social, economic, and diplomatic evolution of many of the currently emerging nations without states. Including nations from all continents―from the Chechen in Eastern Europe, to the Ibo in Africa, and the Quebeckers in North America―the book addresses the current nationalist resurgence by focusing on the most basic element of any nationalism, the nation itself.

The book provides the only source of concise information on stateless nations. Each entry includes the nation's name and alternative names, population statistics, information on major languages and religions, geographical information, independence declarations, information on the national flag, a brief sketch of the primary national group or groups, and a profile of the nation's history and national development to the present. A chronological appendix of declarations of independence helps to set the waves of nationalism in an historical context. A second appendix provides a geographic listing, by region and nation, of national organizations.

From Booklist
This title is an alphabetically arranged survey of 210 little-known "nations" that are not states and are not recognized by major countries as being independent political entities. The author claims in his preface that there are altogether some 9,000 such groups, and he discusses the problems involved in establishing criteria for inclusion. Antarctica, for example, publishes postage stamps, but has no citizens; Palestine has embassies but is not an independent state. His final criterion seems to be "those stateless nations that have demonstrated a political mobilization in pursuit of a goal, the status of a self-governing political entity." Under this umbrella are well-known "nations" such as Scotland, Lombardy, Puerto Rico, and Quebec, as well as the little-known Kawrhoolei, Kuban, Mari-el, Romanistan (the "nation" of the Gypsies), and Wah.

Each entry is three pages in length and includes a map of the locale; a black-and-white drawing of the flag (with text description); data on population geography, and the inhabitants; and a longer passage on the history of the people and especially on recent attempts at independence or self-government, followed by a bibliography. Appendixes include dates of declarations of independence and a list of the entries arranged by continent. A rather undesirable feature is that each entry is listed by its technically correct name, rather than by a commonly known one. Thus, the Isle of Man is listed as Mannin, the land of the Basques as Euzkadi, the Punjab as Khalistan, Lapland as Sapmi, and Greenland as Kalaallit-Nunaat. The reader is therefore advised to make frequent use of the index.

"You and I are fortunate to have this book available to us. Concisely and clearly each entry here contains the essential facts about the 'nations' without states. Quickly, quietly this book can be consulted whenever we discover or realize that as alert individuals or as scholars we are not omniscient. We can or must consult a reliable source about a nation' when we read or hear that one of them or its members have proudly publicized its identity by staging a demonstration or celebrating an anniversary, by protesting a grievance or petitioning some organization such as a church or the United Nations, or by committing a noble or atrocious act. This 'dictionary' is veritably encyclopedic in its scope."-From the foreword by Leonard W. Doob

A total disaster
By P. Madalik
The same text describes 3 of Minahan's books I own, as the text describing these nations given as examples is a copy-paste with very minor differences in all the books: Nations without States: A Historical Dictionary of Contemporary National Movements, One Europe, Many Nations: A Historical Dictionary of European National Groups and Encyclopedia of the Stateless Nations: Ethnic and National Groups Around the World. Guess I have not made much bigger stupidities in my life than to ordering all of these books at the same time.

Unfortunately, this book is a disaster. It is full of mistakes, especially about the given number of peoples, but it has historical or linguistic mistakes as well. For example, I'll give just a few data about Livonians:

Population: Minahan (M.) gives 100 000 (!), while the actual number is only a few hundreds at present. Though, historically Livonians once inhabited most part of today's Latvian coastline, the assimilation took part mostly centuries ago, so that people do not identify themselves as Livonians.

Historical Livonian province was only in its southwestern part ethnically Livonian, and the data M. gives about the Livonians in Estonia, is totaaly mistaken. The so-called Livonian cultural center of Massiaru town in Estonia has nothing to do with Livonians, and, after all, is only a smaal village.

While Livonians are a really tiny nation, the number is incorrect about some not so small nations as well, including in cases when the census data is available even by Internet. Some examples:

Ingrians: by M. 90 000 in Russia, 20 000 in Estonia and 250 000 in Finland. Actually, the total number was 67 813 at 1989 in Soviet Union, and all the Ingrians in Finland migrated there after the S.U. collapsed.

Karels: by M. 26% of the people of Karelian Republic in Russia, actually about 10%.

Mordvins: 1,848 millions by M., actually less than 1,1 millions.

And, one example from central Europe - Sorbs: by M. 543 000, including 40 000 in Poland; actually, about 60 000, as well as all in Germany.

So, after the data what can easily be controlled, how can you trust the data what is harder to check?

As a conclusion - I cannot find any more misleading so-called scientific book.

This is a pioneer theoretical study of diplomacy from the viewpoint of political science. It defines diplomacy precisely, and distinguishes it from the other institutions with which it is often confused. The work commences with a historical analysis of diplomacy through the ages in order to afford a theoretical description of the concept. After defining the term, Calvet de Magalhaes goes on to examine the value of current ideas concerning diplomacy. He also describes deviations from normal diplomatic practice, such as backchannel diplomacy, combat diplomacy, and espionage. The work concludes with a detailed precis of the different elements of diplomatic activity.

Their Place on the Stage: Black Women Playwrights in America (Contributions in Afro-American & African Studies), by Eliz Brown Guillory

This study succinctly views some works of nine black women playwrights, who flourished between 1916 and 1935, and explores--in some detail--some characteristics of selected plays of Alice Childress, Lorraine Hansberry, and Ntozake Shange. . . . This is a well-conceived, well-researched, well-written study. Especially useful are Brown-Guillory's careful definition of terms and her clearly pointing out the directions in which she is heading. American Literature

Brown-Guillory's study is a reference work important to anyone studying black women playwrights, or black drama. Her ideas and terminology describing these playwrights are well-reasoned, and her analysis of symbolism and its place in Western and African traditions is well-supported. Black American Literature Forum

This important contribution to African American and women's studies analyzes the dramatic works of America's black women playwrights. The plays of such writers as Alice Childress, Lorraine Hansberry, and Ntozake Shange are examined in light of the tradition from which they emerged. Brown-Guillory begins by tracing the development of African American theatre with its roots in African theatrics, then moves on to discuss women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance such as Angelina Weld Grimke, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Georgia Douglas Johnson, May Miller, Mary Burrill, Myrtle Smith Livingston, Ruth Gaines-Shelton, Eulalie Spence, and Marita honner. Though rarely anthologized and infrequently made the subject of critical interpretation, asserts the author, the plays of these early twentieth-century black women offer much to the American theatre in the way of content, tonal and structural form, characterization, as well as dialogue, and were instrumental in paving a way for black playwrights from the 1950s to the present.

"This is the first book-length study of black American women playwrights. It will be useful to scholars in the fields of black and women's literature and an excellent source of background reading in graduate and undergraduate courses on American women playwrights. The author's training as both a scholar and a playwright is evident in this book. The study begins with a brief discussion of the African origins of African American theater. It then moves into an analysis of the many women playwrights of the Harlem Renaissance who are rarely mentioned in most literary studies of the era. In the third chapter the focus narrows on the three playwrights who constitute the core of the study: Lorraine Hansberry, Alice Childress, and Ntozake Shange. In addition to a discussion of each of their major plays, Brown-Guillory analyzes the tonal and structural forms of their plays and the images of blacks each woman creates. The three playwrights are linked in this study by their portrayal of the black struggle in an inhumane society and by their common focus in the spirit of survival' of African Americans. Several major black women playwrights, such as Adrienne Kennedy, are not included in this discussion, but through her work Brown-Guillory has nonetheless sounded a call for more studies of this topic."-Choice

The Stage
By Paula Y. Bickham
If you have wondered "Where can I find the names of black playwrights and their plays, so I can look them up?", this little book is packed with loads of such information, interspersed with the historical synopses. It doesn't just speak to female playwrights either, though the title gives that impression. It is a good point of departure that acquaints the reader with the realization that America had, and has, numerous black male and female playwrights whose writing reflects the eras in which they lived, and are living. This little gem also briefly addresses the role of black stage actors performing plays written by white playwrights. We don't hear often of the works of black playwrights so for me this book also served as a handy reference guide to further pursue the roles and writings of blacks as it relates to the American stage.

?The annotations for each of the 503 books are excellent. This work will be very useful to those who are either adopted or who are thinking of adopting.?-ARBA

?This annotated bibliography provides an extensive list of literature on adoption issues for youth. Complementing Lois Ruskai Melina's work, Adoption: An Annotated Bibliography and Guide [RBB S 1 87], which lists mostly books for adults, this volume is arranged by age level and includes newer and broader-based titles. Lengthy annotations reveal each book's strengths and weaknesses. Books address topics like age of arrival, sibling adoptions, single-parent and foster-parent adoption, step families, transracial and inter-country adoption, minority families, special needs, surrogacy, and other adoption-related situations. To compile the bibliography, the editor consulted standard selection aids, adoption agencies, databases, and interested professionals. Both in-print and out-of-print items are included. The 500 titles are arranged in four major sections: "Preschool and Primary Readers," "Intermediate Readers," "Junior High Readers," and "High School Readers." Titles seem appropriate to the levels, although librarians should consult bordering sections to incorporate those titles that appeal to a wider readership. Entries vary from five to twenty lines and include full bibliographic citations. Content is summarized, and critical comments about applicability and bias make the annotations most useful. Appendix A lists significant adult titles, usually professional, to guide librarians. Appendix B provides names and addresses of adoption-related organizations. Three indexes follow: author and illustrator, title, and subject. Some cross-references are provided. With its wide coverage, critical comments, and varied access points, this bibliography should be useful in most youth-relatedlibraries.?-Reference Books Bulletin
