DONALD J. MABRY is Professor of History and Senior Fellow, Center for International Security and Strategic Studies at Mississippi State University. He has written Mexico's Accion Nacional: A Catholic Alternative to Revolution, The Mexican University and the State, and was coauthor of Neighbors--Mexico and the United States as well as numerous articles.

Dated analysis, but nonetheless quite useful.

Mabry, along with the authors of eleven essays in this book, provides insightful and useful analysis of the policy implications imposed by drug trafficking between the U.S. and Latin America. The main strength of the book is its descriptions of the institutions that perpetuate the flow of drugs; the complexities of the issue are made much easier to understand. The authors' suggestions for U.S. policy are unrealistic, however. This is due in large part to the fact that the book is ten years old, and to some degree to some authors' idealism.

The book begins with an author's preface and is followed by an introductory essay that discusses the development of black American playwrights from the antebellum period to World War II. The heart of the book, the biographical directory, is organized alphabetically, with each entry providing highlights of the author's life and career; collected anthologies that include any works; and an annotated chronological list of individual dramatic works, including genre, length, synopses, production history, prizes and awards, and script sources. Three appendixes offer information on other playwrights and their works, additional librettists and descriptions of their shows, and a chronology of dramatic works by genre. A bibliography cites such information sources as reference books and critical studies, dissertations, play anthologies, and newspapers and periodicals frequently consulted, as well as significant libraries and repositories. The book concludes with title and general indexes and an index to early black theatre organizations. This work will be an important reference source for courses in black American drama and theatre history, and a valuable addition to both public and academic libraries.

BERNARD L. PETERSON is Professor Emeritus of English and Drama at Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina. Good effort but still pretty dry. . .

I appreciate DiGaetani's effort and I do agree with him on one count, the plays of Carlo Gozzi had nearly been lost and he has provided the English speaking audience with access to them. Something, however, has been lost in the translation. Having read Gozzi's original, DiGaetani does not help it into this century all that much as it reads like something not thought out. He has changed the original scenarios into playtexts but the plays still read like something made up on the spot, there is very little flow. I suppose the best way to pu it is it reads like a bad translation, sentences and characters are choppy and the jokes often make no sense and are rarely even amusing. By far the worst is his version of The Love of Three Oranges, likely Gozzi's most popular play since the fame of the opera. Do yourself a favor and skip this version of Three Oranges in favor of DePiano's (ISBN: 1411602250). In fact, a moments review will find you better versions of each of these plays and you will likely be able to even get them cheaper if you by the plays individually. Overall, I was very disappointed in this book. I had high hopes for having these plays brought into today and instead found texts as old as before, only now in english.

About the Author

VICTOR J. DANILOV, former President and Director of the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, directs the Museum Management Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is the author or editor of fourteen books, including America's Science Museums (Greenwood Press, 1990) and this planning guide's companion volume, Corporate Museums, Galleries, and Visitor Centers: A Directory (Greenwood, 1991).

Through the Pale Door is a bibliographical guide to the primary sources and central texts of American Gothic literature. It surveys and defines the Gothic achievements of approximately 200 American writers who were working in and were influenced by various modes of Gothicism from 1798 to 1982. The book collects, selects, identifies, and classifies all specimens of American Gothic literary activity from its initial expression at the end of the 18th century in the novels of Charles Brockden Brown, to the writings of the modern masters such as H.P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Joyce Carol Oates, and Stephen King.

The historical introduction explains and emphasizes those special characteristics, tendencies, and directions taken by the shapers of an American Gothic tradition which made it different from the British model form. The core bibliography brings together 509 entries selected to suggest the development and variety of American Gothic endeavor in both its popular and more serious manifestations. Each item in the bibliography is analytic and critical as well as synoptic in its substance with each item assigned a single number for instantaneous referencing and cross-referencing. The value of this bibliography to some extent depends upon the measure of user agreement with the overall thesis; still it should be favorably considered by libraries, academic and public, supporting a strong American literature program. FREDERICK S. FRANK is Professor of English and Holder of the National Endowment for the Humanities Chair at Allegheny College. Olson, a history professor at Sam Houston State University, has written many books, including Historical Dictionary of European Imperialism (1991). Here he has brought together a massive amount of information on 1,800 distinct ethnic groups in Africa today. They range from large groups such as the Yoruba to relatively unknown subgroups and to the Europeans and Asians who settled in the continent of 700,000,000 people.

The alphabetically arranged, clearly written, concise descriptions are frequently a paragraph in length but sometimes just a few sentences. The longer entries include the group's location, historical background, culture, economy, language, population estimate, and religion, even the specific Islamic tradition followed.

Cross-references are extensive, from variant spellings of the groups' names and from subgroups to larger ethnic or language groups. Without editorializing, the work shows the impact of European conquests and recent tragedies resulting from ethnic warfare. References at the end of each entry lead the user to pertinent articles or books. A helpful chronology of African history through 1995 and a selected bibliography complete the work. While a map showing the groups' locations by country would be unwieldy, an index listing the groups by country would have been useful.

This comprehensive reference source will be valuable in academic and large public libraries. JAMES S. OLSON is Distinguished Professor of History at Sam Houston State University, where he has taught since 1972. He is the author of more than 20 books on U.S. and world history. With Robert Shadle, he edited Historical Dictionary of the British Empire (Greenwood, 1996).
