About the Author
Kaser is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Library and Information Science at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN). Over the past 37 years, he has consulted on the design of more than 220 college and university library buildings through-out the world.

This book gives a lot of examples without having ever bored me, like many peer-reviewed publications do. There's an enormous amount of information about the reading habits of soldiers during the American Civil War and also valuable context for understanding the limited number of libraries (as we know them today, at least) and why American didn't read as much until after this war. The explosion of popularity of novels, magazines, and other reading materials is largely attributed to these soldiers' demands for reading materials during the war.
