This work is meant to fill the current need for information on cultural diversity in libraries. Its scope is broader than that of Cultural Diversity in Libraries (Professional Reading, LJ 9/1/94), an edited collection that grew out of a particular university library's experiences. This volume offers an overview of muliculturalism, discussing, among other things, its history, its place in public and academic libraries, the recruitment of a diverse staff, and the demography of library personnel. It also includes an essay by Clara Chu, "Education for Multicultural Librarianship." The authors of Multiculturalism in Libraries, all professors of library science at Kent State University, have enriched their book with a liberal sprinkling of references and with a final chapter bibliographic essay, "Library Resources for Multicultural Library and Information Sources." In a section entitled "Things That Work," case studies are presented from three U.S. libraries: the California State Library, the University of Michigan (also the subject of Cultural Diversity in Libraries), and the Loraine Public Library. Both works belong in any library whose administration is interested in diversity issues.

This is my favorite book!

The purpose of this book is to provide an extensive -- practically exhaustive -- bibliography of the materials that exist on Edwin Booth, celebrated tragedian. This enormous project is accomplished flawlessly by Oggel, whose annotations are concise, witty, and accurate. It will save the years of your life it would take to simply discover the existence of the materials it lists. To the researcher of Edwin Booth, it reads like the most thrilling book.

It also includes, in the beginning, a short biography of Edwin. This is brief but gracefully encompasses all of the most significant aspects of his life. This is especially needed since the last serious biography of Edwin Booth was written in the 1950's by an incompetant, gossipy author.

Oggel has done a great service to all researchers of Edwin Booth. Thank you, Oggel!

About the Author

ALETHEA K. HELBIG is Professor of English Language and Literature at Eastern Michigan University. A former president of the Children's Literature Association, she has published over one hundred articles in professional journals, such as Children's Literature and The Children's Literature Association Quarterly. She has also contributed to reference books such as American Women Writers, Writers for Children, and Masterplots.

AGNES REGAN PERKINS is Professor Emeritus of English Language and Literature at Eastern Michigan University. She has published numerous articles in journals and reference books, including A Tolkien Compass, Unicorn, Children's Literature, Children's Literature Association Quarterly, Writers for Children, and Masterplots. She has also co-compiled three poetry anthologies, two of them with Helbig. Helbig and Perkins are co-authors of Dictionary of American Children's Fiction, 1859-1959, Dictionary of American Children's Fiction, 1960-1984, and Dictionary of British Children's Fiction, 2 vols. (Greenwood Press, 1985, 1986, and 1989, respectively).

This book presents an approach to financial sector reform composed of financial sector diagnosis, policy and institutional targeting, macroeconomic reforms, bank regulation and supervisory reform, and privatization. The work also presents criteria to help decision-makers apply the approach. The issues and approaches presented are as relevant to the emerging democracies of Eastern Europe and such transitional countries as Brazil and Mexico as they are to developing countries.

The authors begin with an introductory discussion of the two-pronged strategy of financial reform and privatization and then, in chapter 2, provide an overview of developing financial systems. Chapter 3 discusses the public/private debate. Chapter 4 is devoted to financial sector liberalization, and chapter 5 goes on to discuss the privatization of financial institutions. A framework for financial reform and privatization is presented in chapter 6, and chapter 7 provides concluding comments. In addition, a series of case studies are presented in the appendix. These case studies demonstrate the methods and strategies used to address financial sector reform in Bangladesh, Chile, Guinea, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Philippines. This book will be useful to financial and development experts and to policy makers in countries amenable to changing their financial systems. About the Author

NEAL S. ZANK is a consultant and Research Associate at the Center for Global Management and Research at the George Washington University. He is coauthor of Reforming Financial Systems: Policy Change and Privatization (Greenwood, 1991) and Welfare System Reform: Coordinating Federal, State, and Local Public Assistance Programs (Greenwood, 1993), and he has written numerous articles on job training, foreign aid, and international economic issues. Mr. Zank was Associate Director of the National Commission for Employment Policy (1990-1993) and a staff member for two Presidential commissions and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

LARRY SITSKY is an internationally acclaimed composer, pianist, musicologist, and teacher and is the Head of Composition Studies at the Australian National University School of Music. His previous publications include Busoni and the Piano: The Works, the Writings, and the Recordings (Greenwood, 1986), The Classical Reproducing Piano Roll: A Catalogue-Index (Greenwood, 1990), and Music of the Repressed Russian Avant-Garde, 1900-1929 (Greenwood, 1994).
