The Islamic tradition, which in both its classical and contemporary forms presents a rich variety of materials for discussions of statecraft, including issues connected with the justification, conduct, and ultimate aims of war, is then assessed by a group of leading Islamicists including Fred Donner, Richard C. Martin, Bruce Lawrence, and Ann Mayer. The two major themes stressed by the contributors are the historical and theoretical approaches to war and peace in the two great religious and cultural traditions. In every case, the chapters are broadly historical and comparative in nature. Kelsay and Johnson's Just War and Jihad, together with their companion volume, Cross-Crescent and Sword: The Justification and Limitation of War in Western and Islamic Tradition (Greenwood Press, 1990), represent the outcome of interdisciplinary and cross-cultural dialogues.

An introduction takes up the various themes present in the chapters and reflects their significance for comparative studies of cultural attitudes on war and peace. In the book's first major division four chapters deal with foundational concerns. Here the authors identify sources and basic themes of religious thought that influence Western and Islamic approaches to war and peace. The two chapters of Part II take up particular questions connected with the phenomenon of holy war. In the final section two contributors assess the status of the international law on war and peace. For students and scholars of comparative religion, ethics, and international relations this comparative study, which establishes the persistence of certain human concerns across the boundaries of particular cultures, makes timely and important reading.

About the Author

JOHN KELSAY is Associate Professor, Department of Religion, Florida State University, Tallahassee. He was coauthor of Human Rights and the Conflict of Culture and coeditor with James Turner Johnson of Cross, Crescent, and Sword (Greenwood, 1990). His articles, Religion, Morality, and the Governance of War and Divine Commands and Social Order are forthcoming. He is currently writing several essays on ethics in Islam.

JAMES TURNER JOHNSON is Professor of Religion, University Director of International Programs, and a member of the graduate faculty in political science at Rutgers University. A former Goggenheim Fellow and Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellow, his previous books include Ideology, Reason, and the Limitation of War, Just War Tradition and the Restraint of War, Can Modern War Be Just? and The Quest for Peace: Three Moral Traditions in Western Cultural History. Johnson has also published over forty articles in various American and European scholarly journals.

NICOLAS KANELLOS is Professor of Hispanic and Classical Languages at the University of Houston. He is the editor of Latino Short Fiction (with Luis Davila), Nuevos Pasos: Chicano and Puerto Rican Drama (with Jorge Huerta), and the author of Mexican American Theatre Then and Now and The History of Hispanic Theatre in the United States until 1940.

About the Author

Rosemary Blieszner is professor of gerontology and family studies in the Department of Family and Child Development and associate director of the Center for Gerontology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She received her PhD from Pennsylvania State University in Human Development-Family Studies with a concentration in Adult Development and Aging. Her research focuses on family and friend relationships and psychological well-being in adulthood and old age. She is co-author, with Rebecca G. Adams of Older Adult Friendship: Structure and Process (1989) and Adult Friendship (1992).

Victoria Hilkevitch Bedford is assistant professor of psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Indianapolis. She received her PhD in developmental psychology from Rutgers University, and was a National Institute on Aging Postdoctoral Fellow with the Midwest Council for Social Research on Aging. Her research interests and publications are in family relationships of middle-aged and old adults (especially sibling relationships), family relations in a social network context, and attachment across the lifespan.

Some of the biographical information for the profiles comes from primary sources, and the location of the individual's papers are given, when known.

Provided here are African Americans who have achieved success in financial services; in retail and service industries; in publishing, advertising, and broadcasting; in manufacturing; in real estate and construction; and in agriculture. Although the majority of the subjects lived in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, African Americans have figured in the world of business throughout American history, such as James Forten, the colonial sailmaker. Personalities profiled include Booker T. Washington, Ebony publisher John H. Johnson, and arbitrager Reginald F. Lewis. Among the women are banker Maggie Lena Walker, manufacturer of beauty products Madame C. J. Walker, model Naomi Sims, and advertising executive Barbara Gardner Proctor. All of the entries are readable and interesting, such as the profile of William Alexander Leidesdorff, one of the early developers of San Francisco. Many of the people found here are not covered in standard biographical works. The biographies are listed in appendixes by place of birth, by place of business, and by type of business. There is a separate list of the nine women represented. Closing the volume is a 20-page bibliographic essay and a detailed index

About the Author

JOHN N. INGHAM is Professor of History at the University of Toronto. His earlier books include Contemporary American Business Leaders (Greenwood, 1990), Biographical Dictionary of American Business Leaders (4 vols., Greenwood, 1983), and Making Iron and Steel: Independent Mills in Pittsburgh, 1820-1920 (1991). He is currently working on a study of African-American business in southern cities from 1880 to 1945.

LYNNE B. FELDMAN is an independent researcher and writer. She is currently working on a study of the African-American community in Birmingham, Alabama, and is the co-author of Contemporary American Business Leaders.

This one-volume reference collects important information about the current status of the indigenous peoples of Central and South America and offers a chronology of the conquest of the Amerindian tribes; a list of tribes by country; and an extensive bibliography of surviving American Indian groups. Historical as well as contemporary descriptions of approximately 500 existing tribes or groups of people are provided along with several bibliographic citations at the conclusion of each entry. The focus of the volume is on those Indian groups that still maintain a sense of tribal identity.

For the vast majority of his entries, James S. Olson draws material from the Smithsonian Institution's seven-volume Handbook of South American Indians as well as other classic resources of a broad, general nature. Much attention is also focused on the complicated question of South American languages and on the definition of what constitutes an Indian. Olson's introduction cites dozens of valuable reference works relating to these topics. Following the introduction, this survey of surviving Amerindians is divided into sections that contain entries for each existing tribe or group; an appendix listing tribes by country; the Amerindian conquest chronology; and a bibliographical essay. This unique reference work should be an important item for most public, college, and university libraries. It will be welcomed by reference librarians, historians, anthropologists, and their students.

A survey of Amerindian peoples is a most complex subject, and historian Olson ( Native Americans in the Twentieth Century , Univ. of Illinois Pr., 1986) has done a magnificent job of compiling a dictionary that is comprehensive and well supported by cross references and extensive bibliographies. Succinct entries provide social, demographic, and historical data on the 500 extant tribes south of Mexico. While depending heavily on the monumental Handbook of South American Indians (Cooper Square, 1963. reprint), he has incorporated and updated information from myriad sources, filling a major void in Latin American research materials. There is also an index of tribes by country, extensive bibliographies by ethnic group, and an extensive 15-page chronology. This is a book large libraries cannont afford to be without.

Extinct cultures and thoroughly acculturated groups are included for no stated reason. Several entry headings are not culture names, but country-specific ethnic slurs against indigenous people, and these could have been treated separately or omitted. Brief source bibliographies follow historical entries. Spot checking disclosed a spelling error that created a bibliographic ghost ("Quichoan Linguistic Prehistory") following the "Quechua" entry, p.. 308. L. Campbell's Quichean Linguistic Prehistory (1977) is correctly cited below the "Quiche" entry, p.. 309. Appendixes include "tribes" listed by country, and a chronology of culture change, which omits such significant events as the rise of Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) in Peru in 1980, which, although noted in Olson's introduction, is left out, again from the "Quechua" entry. A separate selected bibliography of "general" works, a regional mishmash ordered only by author name, is followed by specific bibliographies for selected cultures which include recent, high quality scholarly studies. JAMES S. OLSON is Professor of History, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. His previously published books include Historical Dictionary of the Vietnam War, and Historical Dictionary of the New Deal (Greenwood Press, 1988 and 1985, respectively). His upcoming Historical Dictionary of European Imperialism will be published in March 1991 by Greenwood Press. Professor Olson is now working on a historical dictionary of the Spanish Empire.

This translation of Johann Ewald's classic essay, Abhandlung Uber den kleinen Krieg, published in 1785, describes light infantry tactics in an era of heavy infantry formations. Robert Selig and David Skaggs comment on Ewald's treatise on partisan warfare and its relevance to current military doctrine. They also provide extensive scholarly notations with the text, explaining people, places, and events during the Seven Years' War and the American Revolution, where Ewald had extensive experience as a company commander in the Hessian Field Jaeger Corps. This first English translation should be of real interest to historians of American Revolution and pre-Napoleonic warfare and of special use to military professionals today in the Army and Marine Corps.

Captain Ewald, eventually a Major General in the Danish Army, describes the recruiting and training of light infantry troops, and discusses their use both in the Seven Years' War and the American Revolution at length. He provides illuminating insights into light infantry tactics and doctrine.

About the Author

ROBERT A. SELIG is Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Hope College. He has published a number of scholarly articles dealing with eighteenth-century German-American history. German is his first language.

DAVID CURTIS SKAGGS is Professor of Military History and Strategy at the Air War College. He has written a number of publications on the history of the American Revolutionary era and on military history. He also served as Command Historian, U.S. European Command, Stuttgart, Germany. His books include Roots of Maryland Democracy, 1753-1776 (Greenwood, 1973), and he is co-editor of In Defense of the Republic: Readings in American Military History.

For students of counterinsurgency, light infantry tactics, and the American Revolution

Every student of American history (at least those who stayed awake) knows the story of George Washington attacking the Hessians on Christmas Eve.

The author of this work was an officer of those Hessians. Ewald articulates the needs of a conventional force using unconventional tactics to oppose an insurgency. Just like the Marine Corps' 1940 Small Wars Manual, many books about the US-Vietnam war, a plethora of current articles about Iraq and Afghanistan, and a host of other works.

For the contemporary counterinsurgent, Ewald provides a sense of continuity, a sense that you are not alone, and others have shared the challenges you face. To be fair, there is little said that hasn't been said elsewhere, but that someone described an experience you share in in 1785, 230 years ago, is proof that you are not alone, that others have shared in the trials through the ages. On the other hand, sometimes historical perspective can offer insights that did not emerge from more recent works, like the 1940 Small Wars Manual.

For a student of light infantry tactics, Ewald provides two things. First, he provides examples of early dispersed tactics using precision small arms, tactics that required initiative, discipline, and dynamic leadership while breaking with Napoleonic tactics in every way. Second, he commiserates with the junior officer who sees a need for change while facing senior leaders who cannot see beyond their comfort zone in obsolescent concepts. The struggle is real, and goes back centuries, brother. Don't surrender, and don't back down.

For students of the American Revolution, Ewald provides a perspective seldom voiced, that of neither the Colonials nor the British, but a British 'military contractor'. We hear the voices of American patriots, and occasionally our French allies (since the war conveniently served their interests), and once in a while we hear the thoughts of Brits who were defeated by a pack of Colonials, but the German mercenaries are seldom, if ever heard from. The bitterness at defeat by a bunch of untrained an poorly equipped peasants stung, and stung hard. This is a voice who deserve to be heard.

For a wide range of historians and theorists, this is a valuable work. I can't recommend it highly enough.
