Incredible reference resource

Basically this is a biographical dictionary of every major (and a lot of minor) artists who worked in fantasy and science fiction up to the date of publication. As part of their biography there is a checklist of every magazine and books they worked on. As a person who collects original drawings and paintings in this field this has been the most useful book I have ever found. I highly recommend it- on the early art it is better than anything you will find on the net.

About the Author

BARBARA DOTTS PAUL is Associate Professor and Librarian at the University of Wisconsin―Stevens Point. She has published two other bibliographies, The Polish-German Borderlands: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood, 1994) and The Germans After World War II: An English Language Bibliography (1990). With Justus F. Paul, she coauthored The Badger State: A Documentary History of Wisconsin (1979).

JUSTUS F. PAUL is Professor of History and Dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin―Stevens Point. He is the author of The World Is Ours: A History of the University of Wisconsin―Stevens Point, 1894-1994 (1994), Senator Hugh Butler and Nebraska Republicanism (1976) and editor of Selected Writings of Rhys W. Hays (1977). With Barbara J. Paul, he coauthored The Badger State: A Documentary History of Wisconsin (1979).

1992 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the great Pacific naval battles in the Coral Sea and off Midway Island. Occuring within a month of each other, these turning Point engagements brought an end to Japan's military expansion and six months of Allied defeat and retreat in the Pacific. Fought mostly over the ocean by airmen flying primarily from aircraft carriers, the battles were marked on both sides by courage and luck, forewarning and foreboding, skill and ineptitude.

In this first book-length, partially-annotated bibliography, Smith provides more than 1,300 citations to the growing literature on these major battles. Materials in seven languages are cited as well as information provided on many of the repositories located in the United States or abroad that have holdings necessary for the continuing reinterpretation of the battles. Following an overview and introduction, the volume contains sections devoted to reference works and sites, general histories, hardware, biography, combatants, and special studies, and separate section for both battles. While the high list price may scare the general reader from this work, it is a valuable research tool for anyone wishing to develop an in-depth interest in Grant. Although a truly complete bibliography on Grant may be impossible to compile, Kelsey, as far as I can see, has come commendably close. No matter what aspect of Grant's life you wish to study--his childhood, military career, Presidency, his Memoirs, etc.--you are sure to be steered to a plethora of citations, intelligently and frequently wittily annotated.

A postscript: I also appreciated Kelsey's pointed reference to Grant's "Alleged Alcohol Problem," as well as her implied willingness to speak favorably of Grant's enigmatic mother, Hannah. In the "Grant community" nowadays, doing these things seems to require some courage. Good for her.

Well researched and organized, this reference book is essential for anyone writing about Grant, or even an interested reader who wants to dig deep into specific areas of Grant study. The annotations are very helpful. The compiler includes sources that are both flattering and unflattering to the subject, making this a well-balanced work.

"Another in a fine series, this is the second recent bibliography on the health of black Americans by Rice and Jones. Their Black American Health focused on sources published during the 1970s and 1980s. This work, however, covers publications from 1870 to 1960 and includes nearly 600 annotations; the vast majority of items cited are journal articles. Entries are arranged into three time periods: 1871-1919 (post-Reconstruction to the early 20th century), 1920-1950, and 1951-1960, with annotations numbered in sequence. The introduction, which discusses health and working conditions for black Americans from slavery to the mid-20th century, is fairly lengthy and informative. Rice and Jones's two works combine several decades of important literature, thereby making research more convenient and less time consuming. Lenwood G. Davis's bibliography A History of Selected Diseases in the Black Community (1976) is also a listing of retrospective titles on health; however, the work under review is far more comprehensive than Davis's 28-page pamphlet. . . . The framing dates are well explained in the text: little was published on this topic before 1871, because blacks did not leave the plantations (which provided limited health care) in great numbers until after emancipation and reconstruction; post-1960 publications have been listed in a companion volume by the same authors, Black American Health (Greenwood, 1987.) An introductory essay gives an overview on such health-related topics as sanitation, housing, and working conditions. ?Another in a fine series, this is the second recent bibliography on the health of black Americans by Rice and Jones. Their Black American Health focused on sources published during the 1970s and 1980s. This work, however, covers publications from 1870 to 1960 and includes nearly 600 annotations; the vast majority of items cited are journal articles. Entries are arranged into three time periods: 1871-1919 (post-Reconstruction to the early 20th century), 1920-1950, and 1951-1960, with annotations numbered in sequence. The introduction, which discusses health and working conditions for black Americans from slavery to the mid-20th century, is fairly lengthy and informative. Rice and Jones's two works combine several decades of important literature, thereby making research more convenient and less time consuming. Lenwood G. Davis's bibliography A History of Selected Diseases in the Black Community (1976) is also a listing of retrospective titles on health; however, the work under review is far more comprehensive than Davis's 28-page pamphlet. . . . He has written extensively on black and minority health issues and is coeditor of Health Care Issues in Black America (Greenwood Press, 1987) and Contemporary Public Policy Perspectives and Black Americans (Greenwood Press, 1984) and co-compiler of Black American Health: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1987).

WOODROW JONES JR. is Professor of Political Science and Associate Dean at Texas A & M University. His writings on the topics of black health have appeared in numerous periodicals, and he is the coeditor and co-compiler with Mitchell F. Rice, of Contemporary Public Policy Perspectives and Black Americans, Health Care Issues in Black America, and Black American Health: An Annotated Bibliography (Greenwood Press, 1987).
